Matrix element server

Hi so I'm pretty new to stuff like this, but I want to be able to have my own matrix server, and be able to connect to it using element.

However I don't want a pc or laptop to have to be the server.
Is it possible to use an android phone to run the server ?

If so what program would you use?

L8437 This isn't possible and you can't just 'run' synapse on your home PC and have it function,

As others have said. you need a public IP with open ports for matrix, a domain, and a constantly running server

Hosting a server requires a little more work than just installing an app on a phone. It requires constant maintaining, buying a domain, keeping a domain, having a public ip address, opening ports ect: I don't think you know what you are putting yourself into so please stop before you do something you shouldn't do. If you really want to do it please read a little more before proceeding

I don't think you could host yourself your own matrix server in an android phone. You will also need a domain.
The easier way is to find a hosting provider.

@Tuba has described quite well what it takes to manage your own server. Nowadays, acquiring a server is not really a financial problem : you can get a single board computer (Raspberry Pi for instance) for a few dozens $, £ or €. The main point is acquiring the skill and dedicating the necessary time to administration. The learning curve is quite steep. If you are not familiar with computers, don't go down that rabbit-hole.

Sempa I use Matrix/Synapse. But the whole point here is that self-hosting is not some plug-and-play activity, and setting up an instant messaging app can be particularly difficult.

You should do your own research to find the instance you consider "good", and you want to trust. Like most services the provider can look to your logs and close your account.

If you are not willing to search a lot, but you are OK to share your email, the main long run option is to create an account on the Matrix.org Foundation server. Some GOS moderators use it.

I might start with that question here to not produce a new topic. I believe I already have all prerequisites to run a Matrix server but I'm interested how resource hungry is Synapse nowadays. Did it get better? Posts from few years ago mention it takes a lot of RAM. I'm running a 1 GB VRAM VPS that hosts a couple of services which use _500MB of RAM already. The instance would need to be able to at least host bridges but being able to federate is welcome. Could Eirikr70 or someone else using Synapse elaborate? Thanks.

Byku I have switched from Matrix to Xmpp with Ejabberd. I find it easier to administrate. My Ejabberd container consumes some 100-150 MB so you should be able to make it. A Matrix instance is quite disk hungry if you federate and enter large rooms, since it replicates the whole content of the rooms. Xmpp is more lightweight, having only one instance of the rooms, on the dedicated server.
