Is there an alternative to Google maps that doesn’t shoot the entire point of having GOS in the foot? Or is there a way to lobotomize Google Maps to conform with the goals of GOS?
It's worth noting that installing Google Apps (or any other Google app for that matter) doesn't 'defeat the point' of GrapheneOS. The goal is to provide an OS that is secure and private by default, but the choice of what the user installs on it from there is entirely up to them and their threat model / usecases. Someone installing Google apps still benefits from the enhanced & additional security features, for instance.
OrganicMaps is an alternative to Google Maps and works by downloading and storing map data of the user's desired areas on the device itself, rather than calling to a server and retrieving data of what's being viewed as needed. This means it can be used offline, but can take up a lot of storage if you choose to download a lot of areas.
If no other apps suit your needs, Google Maps can also be used within its own profile, separate from all of your other apps, so you don't have to install it (and the Sandboxed Google Play Services) alongside all of your other apps. You can then end the profile session whenever you're not using it, setting it at rest. The apps you install are only able to enumerate the apps in the same profile as itself, so if you're worried about them attempting to communicate with other apps, having it in its own dedicated profile will help.
