I can't seem to find this info anywhere. I use GrapheneOS on a Pixel 6 Pro. I want to enable location tagging for photos taken with the stock GrapheneOS camera app. How do I accomplish this, and where can I look at a map with the locations of my stored photos marked on it?

I tried enabling location permissions on the camera and gallery apps, and still nothing. These apps now report to be using my location, but when I sort my photos by location, all photos including new and old are filed under No Location. Please help me, and I apologize for my ignorance.

More info, not sure if relevant: I do not have Google Play services installed, and the GPS app I use is Magic Earth. I have the most recent release of GrapheneOS and cannot find anything in the settings called Geotagging or Location Tagging.

Hello,

The reason why this happens is because Camera apps don't wait long enough to get location. You might have noticed that it takes a significant amount of time for the phone to find its location (by using Magic Earth for example).

A solution to this problem is to use Google's location services.

"Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning for improving location detection are disabled by default, unlike the stock OS. These can be toggled in Settings ➔ Location ➔ Location Services ➔ Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning. These features enable scanning even when Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is disabled, so these need to be kept disabled to fully disable the radios when Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are disabled. GrapheneOS itself doesn't currently include a supplementary location service based on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning. These options impact whether apps such as sandboxed Google Play are able to use the functionality if you grant them the Location permission. GrapheneOS plans to eventually include an OS service based on local databases rather than a network-based service giving the user's location to a server whenever location is being used."

Hulk Thanks for your response. I really don't want to use any Google services if I can help it but I appreciate the info. I think I'll probably just wait until the mentioned local database service is implemented. I saw on the page you linked that location tagging is described as an "experimental feature." Do you know if that means it is not available for all users?

Dirk location tagging is currently an "experimental feature" of GrapheneOS Camera app. This is because GrapheneOS Camera app is new and under rapid development.
