And do you know how much time it will take between the Pixel 8 release and the support from GrapheneOS?
Currently I am using the Pixel 4a and want to change, so I am wondering if I should buy a Pixel 7 or wait for Pixel 8 to be supported...

Arnauld do you know how much time it will take between the Pixel 8 release and the support from GrapheneOS?

It's hard to say at the moment since there are always a lot of moving parts when a new smartphone releases.

There's also this: "The strange timing and inclusion of only a single patch (Mali GPU kernel driver fix) in the September Pixel Update Bulletin is due to Android 14 being scheduled for this month but delayed to October...we've already put a significant effort into porting to Android 14 via our limited early access to the source code. We aim to have our Android 14 port available as soon as possible after the stable release is published due to the importance for security. It's unfortunate we don't have full access to the sources in advance like Android partners, but we've had access to more than we usually do this year and for longer due to the delay."

Yes it will be supported. Unless Google starts to lockdown their Pixels or they decide to reduce the hardware security of their devices, I guess. But I don't see why they would.

How much time it will take? That depends, but the team has proven to be extremely fast when it comes to supporting new devices recently, so my guess is that you wouldn't have to wait long. :)

Thanks. By fast do you mean weeks or months? Anyway, I highly appreciate GrapheneOS and using it for 2 years I think now, so it is out of question for me not to have a phone without GrapheneOS on it.

That begs the question: what would the GOS developers do? Would they just stick to older Pixels which will eventually reach planned obsolescence and force an end the GOS project? Or would they consider supporting other devices that allow relocking the bootloader but don't have the same level of hardware-based security (e.g. Fairphone or Shiftphone)?

Elk9877 If what I said was to happen... and that's a big if... well, that is an excellent question. One that I don't have an answer to. It's an interesting topic. The GrapheneOS team has been reluctant in the past to port their projects do other phones.

You mentioned the Fairphone. It has been asked on this forum. The GOS team responded with the fact that the Fairphone team is too slow to deliver updates and, like most other phones, it lacks the hardware security components that Graphene depends on.

Say what you will about Pixel phones and privacy, there isn't much you can say about their security. These are amazing and it's why this project is based on those, and those alone. If another manufacturer a word to provide similar amount of security, on the Hardwell level, with frequent patches software and firmware wise, with the ability to unlock and relock to bootloader and all of that, maybe it could make for a good contender for this project.

But for now? Pixels is all we get and again come out I don't see any reason why Google would change this, but it's interesting to think about.

        Just FYI, a simple reminder:

I am completely talking out of my ass here I am not part of the graphene team, nor am I pretending to be, hell, I don't pretend to know anything about all that I said. I'm mostly speculating. My understanding of the whole thing, is surface level at best, it is insanely complicated, so don't take my words for it.)

Let the record show that I am in strong agreement with the developers.

To finish this thread on a positive note, I too am as keen as, to get an 8 Pro and GOS it :) Did my first GOS tablet for someone last week too. I love what the GOS team have built here, and am incredibly grateful... Thank you Devs!
