A few months ago I performed a DIY screen replacement on my 5a after a drop. Everything was working well until last week. While watching a video on Vanadium, the screen went black. A restart did not resolve the issue. Apart from the screen, the phone seems to be working (haptic feedback on power button, phone calls can be made over bluetooth, etc). I decided to try another screen replacement. Unfortunately this new screen is also always black. While it is possible IFIXIT sent me a faulty screen, this option does not seem likely.

Any advice as to how I might troubleshoot this?

Would trying to get in to safe boot or recovery mode potentially be useful? Since the screen never displays anything, even on boot, I am dubious of this approach.

I should add that at least once before, watching videos in Vanadium also resulted in a black screen. However, I was able to recover use of the screen with a restart.

Thanks!

guy_758 one thing that comes to mind would be trying to re-install the screen component.

This has been an issue with Pixel 5as, I had a similar problem (screen just went entirely blank, no drop), Asurion said it was common and it wasn't the display, it needed an entire motherboard replacement, I ended up having to send it back to Google. Google had extended the warranty on the 5a for this reason, saying that there are display or power issues. Here's a relevant Reddit thread of this problem, there are more if you search the web.

Anyways, not to say for certain this is your issue, but it sounds like it... If you're still covered by the extended warranty, I'd recommend contacting Google, I got lucky and got a 6a as a replacement with no cost.

      Hi,
with my phone I have similar issues, it is dead after the latest update.
If you talk to Google about a replacement, did you tell them you are using a different OS?
Does the replacement also with outside of US?
      Thank you.
