As far as I'm aware, there is no need to install Google Maps. The Google Maps SDK used by other apps is provided through Google Play Services, and not the Google Maps app.

Yes, but I got confused because they didn't tell whether they have the Google Play bundle installed.

Google Services Framework and Google Play services have the same UID, so basically the system treats them as one app in many ways

Google Maps works fine without Google Play services installed. Maps may complain now and then, but just ignore and move on.

mrtoo That's because the Google Maps app doesn't use the Google Maps SDK or any other APIs from Google Play Services. It's a standalone app.

treequell Seems like Google finally added the Play Service dependency. Last update Maps no longer displays a map even though it knows where I am.

Yes these apps dont need Google Maps, but the play services. I can confirm it works great.

With me, Maps stopped displaying a Map without Google Play Services installed, I stepped back a version of Google Maps and it works fine without Play Services installed.
