ABN Amro (Dutch banking app) not working anymore on GrapheneOS

Hey everyone,

Today I noticed that the ABN Amro banking app only shows a splash screen, but it never goes past that anymore. It used to be working on my Pixel 7 Pro running GrapheneOS just fine (without Google Play services). I tried clearing the cache and app data, uninstalling, reinstalling, running without VPN and even installing it on my 2nd user that has Google Play Services by downloading it from the Play Store. All with the same results: the app shows the ABN Amro splash screen, then freezes.

Does anybody encounter the same issue? If so, it could it be that ABN Amro disabled the app for users running GrapheneOS (in their latest update maybe)? I can try ringing their customer support, but wanted to check here first to see if anybody with GrapheneOS can reproduce the issue. (A friend of mine tried with a stock Android 13 on a Pixel 6 Pro device today and the app seems to work fine there)

SeaSaltIceCream First, Keep sure you have Native Code Debugging enabled in Settings app -> Security

Second, Enable Exploit Protection Compatibility mode by Long tapping the app's icon -> Clicking App Info -> Going to Advanced -> Turning on Exploit Protection Compatibility mode

If both of these steps don't work for you, please inform in this thread

You use ABN AMRO without the Google, please can you tell me where to find the direct download APK for ABN AMRO app?

I have Google Sandboxes just only for this app and was give up finding the way to download ABN AMRO not at the Playstore.

Thanks, Native Code Debugging in settings seems to have fixed the issue! I can open the app again, well sort of... The moment I get passed the splash screen and want to login, I now get a pop-up saying the app won't run without Google Play services and then shuts down. I don't have this issue on my second user running Google Play services obviously, but it's a shame this is a requirement now. Before the last app update, it ran fine on my main user account without Google Play.

Anyway, happy I can at least use the app again with the other user. Thanks! :D

Thank you for bring the solution, I had the same problem, Pixel 6 Pro, in a Google sandbox profile never had any issues, till yesterday, I followed your step's and its working again!

88dotorg If it started working after enabling Native debugging, then the new version must have started started using ptrace (Though I think it would be obviously more limited than on Desktop Linux)

And if It only started working after enabling the Exploit Protection compatibility mode, then its either a memory corruption bug in the new version of the app or a false positive (very unlikely)

I did both and after it works, then I realized we don't know the issue so I disabled step 2, like it is with GOS, and only enable step 1 security thing. Restart the phone and see if it works only follow step 1.
Confirmed it works with only step 1.

88dotorg even without using Play Services you can download the app using Aurora Store via now normalized method. You look up the app Play Store link using search in Vanadium and clicking on the link should open it in the app. Start Aurora store beforehand to avoid any errors, you don't need to be logged in. Make sure that opening Play Store link is set for the app.

Heads-up that the ABN Amro app seems to work again on an account without Google Play Services.

It was a bit annoying to switch to my user account with Google Play on it every time that I needed to use the banking app, so I thought I'll give it another try by re-installing the latest version of the app on my primary user account (without Google Play Services installed). And it seems to work again! Do note that it does take significantly longer to login (28 seconds after fingerprint input to get to your account sceen) compared to running it on a user account with Google Play installed (2 seconds after fingerprint to get to your account sceen)
