Regarding onoff, when interested in a service and seeing a ton of third party cookies, I steer clear. It's just a thing that I do. I know browser blocks them (attempts to), but it is nice to know a web service that doesn't want to share your info with other half of the universe. Lord knows where it might end.

[deleted] Their marketing pretty much speaks for itself in that regard that this is not a foremost privacy service but a second number thing. It's to be expected. I personally always expect worse from services engaged in VoIP telephony.

Another interesting service to keep an eye on is https://crypton.sh/, they are European, give you access to real phone numbers (so shortcodes and Account registrations for Signal etc. are possible), allow crypto and work all over a simple web interface. They promise to not recycle numbers and are Tor available. Currently the offer is only UK Numbers, but they are currently testing "SIM cards from other, mostly european countries", so it's promising... Not Open Source, but that's hard to come by with these services anyway...

As of 2021, the following countries do not have mandatory SIM card registration laws: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom.
Buy a KYC free SIM card from one of these countries und use it in your country in roaming. Plus, when you use a SIM in roaming, the local network operator won't be able to see your mobile number, just the country your SIM is from.

SIM cards from at least some of these can't be activated from outside the country to say nothing of fair-usage caps based on the days used "aboard". The entire exercise can get pretty expensive if one is determined to use them to access data, at least when compared to local plans.

I heard it once or twice but can't speak for how true it is. Do you have something you can link me to outside of a silent.link FAQ?

applesbana silent.link only offers US & UK numbers, neither of which are in the EU. And you can't make outbound calls or sms. Local SIM cards are much cheaper, albeit less convenient. That being said, silent.link is a great service!

That's what I had in mind. For example a gifffaff SIM without their inclusive roaming will charge you 3.2p/minute, 1p/text, 10p/MB. It's cheap too compared to some of the other offerings out there. But where I am I can currently get 3GB of data and unlimited calls for a mere 6 euros on a one-month rolling contract basis. These just can't be compared side by side.

These are old cases where customers would not submit support tickets so that we could help them, usually people create such posts or post reviews when the service is not working correctly rather than working, hence the bad reputation in some places. I can assure you that we are still working, adding more modems and more features as time goes on.

Still not sure if this is a serious offering.

The crypton.sh thing has been around for a while (5 or so years at least). I've seen people discussing it, but I don't actually know anyone using it. It doesn't really fit my use case very well. I don't need zero access storage for my SMS. I need a number I can reasonably control. This seems like the opposite of it ("real SIM cards that are put into our bespoke modems"). In their defense, they also seem to market themselves as more of "use it verify additional accounts". I guess if you live someplace with no easy access to prepaid KYCless SIM cards this might work.
