This is an initial release of GrapheneOS based on Android 13 for 4th and 5th generation Pixels. These are signed, production builds and you can upgrade from the 12.1 release. We've tested upgrading from Android 12.1 GrapheneOS to Android 13 GrapheneOS via sideloading and over-the-air updates. We've also tested upgrading from these Android 13 GrapheneOS releases to a future GrapheneOS release. We haven't heavily tested the releases beyond the basics and that's why this is an early experimental release not being pushed out via the Alpha channel.
We plan to have 6th generation Pixel support finished within 24 hours at which point we'll make a new release for all devices that will be announced with proper release notes and tags followed by pushing it out via Alpha. If all goes well, that can be pushed out to Beta and then Stable.
To install these releases as an update, you can use our sideloading guide:
https://grapheneos.org/usage#updates-sideloading
It will take a long time to boot after sideloading since it doesn't do the finalize step in advance like an over-the-air update and has to recompile all your apps after booting. This is usually done in the background before rebooting into a new version. Expect it to take 30 minutes if you have a lot of apps or large apps.
You do not need USB debugging enabled in the OS to sideload an update to recovery. Recovery uses the ADB protocol for sideloading but does not expose debugging in production builds and enforces the standard signature verification and downgrade protection for updates just like the update client in the OS.
The factory images can also be used to do a fresh install but we expect most testers will be updating from Android 12.1 GrapheneOS.
