Updates for Signal Messenger

Hello.

I have Signal installed on my phone which I got from the Aurora Store App and I have a question about updates. I have installed it within the last couple of weeks and the version number is 6.18.4. I have just looked at https://signal.org/android/apk/ and the version showing on that page as a direct download is 6.19.8. I know that Aurora Store is unreliable at the moment for a lot of users (me included) and I am not sure if I will receive updates for Signal from there or ever have the latest version.
If I install the direct download from Signal instead would Obtanium handle the update notifications for me? I know that I could get it from GPS but I have not got that installed and don't particularly want it. I would rather the inconvenience of manual updates than going down the Google route.
Lastly, could someone point me to a suitable app for checking the SHA256 fingerprint of the direct download please?

Signal is able to self-update if installed directly from https://signal.org/android/apk/

That page links to this apk signer tool. I would suggest downloading the apk on your computer, verifying the fingerprint using this tool, then sending the apk file to your phone.

Personally, I'm not too worried about verifying the fingerprint because I know I'm downloading the file straight from signal's website.

Okay so the instructions refer to using their tool on 'supported platforms'. I guess my Linux is not one of the platforms supported. I will have a look on F-Droid and see if I can find an app there to do the job. Thanks for the tip about the direct update ability though.
