trashaccount Having a paid keyboard built into the OS for sure sounds like a great idea.
FUTO is not a paid keyboard.
The payment function seems to be mainly for donation purposes.
de0u I believe the GrapheneOS team has previously indicated that they don't plan to ship any GPLv3 code because it would preclude certain deployment scenarios (for example, devices with the software permanently locked, which may be appropriate for some security devices such as cameras). If I have that right, and understand the FUTO license, I suspect the GrapheneOS team would be averse to shipping code with a mandatory Internet payment system embedded, aside from more-philosophical questions about the nature of open source.
The keyboard wouldn't be a system component but just a pre installed app.
de0u Some time back people were upset when the Simple Mobile tools were sold to a developer with different practices; the response was the Fossify fork. What if FUTO were sold to an entity that people found distasteful? It seems as if that code would be unforkable -- it would be necessary to support paying the new entity, no?
The FUTO licence allows forking.
"You may modify the software only for non-commercial purposes such as personal use for research, experiment, and testing for the benefit of public knowledge, personal study, private entertainment, hobby projects, amateur pursuits, or religious observance, all without any anticipated commercial application.
You may distribute the software or any part of its source code only if you do so free of charge for non-commercial purposes."
It would be nice if GrapheneOS provides additional advanced installations optional to the very minimal standard app set.
There should be a install that directly ships with an advanced keyboard (like FUTO), Stock Android Wallpaper a option to device between Google Play Store or F-Droid + Aurora Store etc.
If you can use a template to settup the phone it would be even better.
