Per-app permanent override dark mode?

Good morning,
I recently installed grapheneos on my new Pixel. Previously I was using a Xiaomi and on that phone I was able to choose which app can be forced to use dark mode or not.
Is it possible to add such a setting in GOS or are there news if it's going to be added in the future?

willie_non it is possible to change force all apps to be dark mode, Not separate ones. Not sure if this satisfies you

Something like this would only ever make it in GrapheneOS if it was a change upstream in AOSP.

Modern apps should allow you to choose between light/dark/system mode, where system dynamically checks whether you're using light or dark mode and adjusts accordingly.

I think the general recommendation is for software to follow the system mode, or to force a mode that makes sense for that application. Not to give the user a choice.

Grkrz I use this right now, but once I restart my Pixel it will reset to default state (off). That's why I'm eager in a more refined solution

Its a developer option - these are designed for developers to test stuff while doing their work, and its best to avoid using these if at all possible. They are not completed robust features. They can often break unexpected things.

e.g. theres been a crippling bug in the past that only effected people who had changed the display cutout setting in dev options. People were stuck with unusable devices until the problem could be identified and a fix rolled out in a new release.

The force option in developer settings just manipulates colors in the applications. It usually works pretty badly for applications that don't have an actual dark theme that follows the system theme. Its an ugly hack and I don't recommend it.

If you have some application that you you think would look good in dark, you should contact the application developer and request it, or find a nicer application to do the job.
