This actually extends legally to all manufacturers, if the device is sold through an american division, which subjects them to the magnusson-moss warranty act. Essentially, for the manufacturer to deny a warranty claim, they are REQUIRED LEGALLY to demonstrate that the damage for which you seek remediation was caused by your action.
I.e., if you brick it by trying to hack/unlock it, that's your fault and they won't warranty it, but if your touch sensor dies, which has nothing to do with the home built operating system you're running on it or what you had to do to install it, then warranty is intact.
