GrapheneOS said this in one of the replies to the uploader about the misinformation they were spreading. OCR used for this but it came out well. I wanted the GrapheneOS stance represented here like it was on YouTube.
@[SwitchedtoLinux] Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions split in 2011. Motorola Mobility then got acquired by Google and sold to Lenovo. The brand name and logo are shared but they're entirely different companies.
Motorola's own operating system has various third party software which won't be relevant to GrapheneOS. One of the components they contracted out started injected affiliate links due to a change from the company making it. It definitely shouldn't have happened but that's a downside of bundling third party software. In GrapheneOS, we don't include third party apps and services even in cases where we want to include an app since it can change and then we're stuck having to fork it or go through a multi year process of removing it. Lenovo has made similar mistakes in the past with Windows. Those things aren't relevant to GrapheneOS since we won't be using their apps/services or OS. It's the hardware, firmware and driver security which matters to us. The business side of Motorola or Lenovo deciding to bundle third party software which ends up being problematic doesn't impact us. Other Android OEMs including Samsung do the same thing including bundling Facebook with privileged access. We don't see it as being a blocker or deterrent to working with those OEMs.
That GitHub repository with bootloader unlocking information is inaccurate and portrays several of the OEMs as being a lot worse than they are. Motorola improved their bootloader unlocking quite a lot and people aren't having issues using another OS on the recent devices with good support for it. I's going to be different for the devices with GrapheneOS support regardless.
A lot of the news articles about GrapheneOS are misquoting us and speculating about things beyond what we've said including claiming we're only supporting folding devices or that we aren't going to have devices with GrapheneOS preinstalled which isn't what we said either. You should look at what they're citing instead of what the news articles say themselves since they're very often wrong, even from supposedly reputable tech news sites. Many are posting a lot of slop these days whether it was spewed up by an LLM or an overworked writer churning out content.
