At least Motorola is a company which want's to earn money and I don't believe that the GrapheneOS community is big enough to guarantee that. I'm giving the project a maximum of 2 years until it will be discontinued, but I really hope I'm wrong.
I see it in a different way. I don't think Motorola's primary incentive is to make money selling devices to GrapheneOS community. They want to sell security to enterprises. Cyber security is not a buzzword anymore even for an average Joe. Aside of Google and Apple there are no main stream offers that are serious about security. Where should enterprises put their trust to defend their two most precious things (money and information)? (Ahem) Samsung Knox?

This deal is a nice example where both parties benefit. Motorola benefits from exceptional GrapheneOS expertise. GrapheneOS benefits by getting a device / devices meeting their security requirements as a consequence (and more benefits in terms of code / timely updates availability).
Edit: I think if / when Motorola will start associating with being a security conscious company (like Google and Apple) it'll be the time for them to invest in security for their lower priced devices.
