Molly is lagging behind the current backup method, it seems. Which is no surprise, seeing how far behind it is already.
I just migrated to Signal FOSS too. Restoring the backup was a real pain... what I did:
- Get Signal FOSS version
Signal 8.19.2.0-FOSS from Github. Start the restore process like you normally would but pick the option to use a single file instead of a folder and let it restore.
- You will fail at the next step, since the Signal servers will refuse to support such an old version. Update the app now (either grab the newest release from Github or use the F-Droid repo, up to you).
- Open the app after the update. You can skip the restoring prompts when they appear, since your data is already restored. Register normally and you should be greeted by your chats.
It's a shame really, but I have also officially switched now. I don't mind if a project struggles with time or budget constraints and can't provide timely updates for a while.
However; when there is complete absence of communication, I'm sorry - but I'm out at that point.
No matter the problems, I find it quite disrespectful leaving your users hanging in a limbo state with no information on whether the project will ever continue while the complications increase. With no ETA, no repo changes and vague statements that something is being worked on, Molly can now be considered abandoned.
As a long time user of many years (and as a donor) it really hurts to say goodbye. But as a German proverb says "Better an end with fear than a fear without end".
