Which parts of android 17 are coming to grapheneos?

Since grapheneos won't include all the Gemini stuff (at least that's my assumption) what changes are part of aosp and which are proprietary google stuff? Are grapheneos going to do any of their own changes? Thanks ahead.

The only changes I have noticed this far that is in GrapheneOS experimental Android 17 build is:

Separate Wifi data and cellular data quick tiles.
LAN access is now part of Nearby Devices permission. One has to grant both Nearby Devices and Network permission to access the LAN. Network permission alone now only allow access to WAN/Internet.
Loopback connections blocked between profiles (but implementation is ineffective, I have already bypassed it to send data across profiles anyway).
Minor theming changes. Supposedly there is a new notification kind, but no app I use seems to use it yet.

droidiguy I am not surprised if Google isn't publishing a lot of documentation about how AOSP -- Android without proprietary parts -- will be different for users, because their marketing is focused on how Android with proprietary parts will work.

The other A17 documentation is for programmers, so it mostly won't make sense for people who are not programmers.

Meanwhile... waiting for a few days will probably reveal a lot.

My phone is too old to support docking, I think it is only like Pixel 8 or 9 series and newer that does. So I don't know if desktop mode is out of experimental or not yet in Android 17.

Uh-oh. Maybe I should also test whether the intended restrictions actually work.

Edit: Yes, I can confirm LAN is accessible even without Nearby Devices permission. This is probably unintended.

The devs might be thinking: the network permission is for full network access. The LAN like the gateway or local DNS might be needed for internet access.

I can see the advantages of disallowing LAN while allowing internet. I am not saying any current approach is correct. Making it more fine grained will certainly be cause of more support. "Why can't I access my IoT devices? I gave network."

It would be nice to have an option for LAN only without full internet access.
Just have a warning that apps could access the internet anyway. It'd still help with 90% of apps or so. Surely an app using DNS to get out data is better than full freedom.

The cellular data quick tile does not appear to be available in secondary user profiles, so I guess you will still have to do a workaround with Android 17 too.

No, the special "Allow to keep working" permission state they added is only for apps targetting Android 16 or earlier, so Google intend for LAN access to be revokable for all apps.

Someone reported the new experimental release made today fixed the issue, I will confirm soon.

Yes, the issue is now resolved in the latest experimental release. Revoking Nearby Devices permission now correctly blocks LAN access, including for apps targetting older Android releases.
