Add AM/PM to clock

Not useful for me as a frequent traveller sometimes crossing more than 12 time zones, advancing/retarding 1 day crossing IDL. Even on mobile phones that shows AM/PM. I most often have to adjust manually time zone settings simply because my phone cannot connect to local internet carriers for autotime adjustments.

K8y I got back from a trip and woke up after a flight around 7pm and thought it was 7am, so I scrambled thinking I was late for a meeting.

Would not happen to you if you would use the 24h time format. 😉

That's the kinda attitude we should avoid. Everyone grows up in their formats there is no right or wrong to this & forcing a format on someone who doesn't use it isn't right. The world will never conform to one ideology so lets make it better.

It was a suggestion, not a try of an enforcement.
Along our whole life things do change and we have to accept new circumstances. 24h format is an alternative format for a missing am/pm addendum and easy to learn, if necessary.

Yes, this is a good point. To be completely honest, I had not noticed until now the lack of AM/PM since it should (?) be obvious. But it is convention, and the way time is shown on pretty much every device. And although this may not be obvious to people in other countries, this is how English is actually spoken. No native English speaker would say something like "meet me at 17:00" (read "seventeen hundred") outside of very specific contexts like the military.

The OP was wrong in demanding it in such a tone and proceeding with the discussion instead of submitting an issue on GitHub.

As for others... I do agree that am/pm format is horrible and I have only seen it used in conversations for convenience, but we shouldn't be arguing over such a dumb thing. Let people use what they want.

The easiest way might be to convert 24-hour format to am/pm somewhere in the launcher code/UI since changing it elsewhere will cause problems.

P.S. This thread is more education for me than anything else, learned a lot about time formats :)

I understsnd GrapheneOS is all about security, privacy, and stability. Cosmetic UI changes may have lower or no priority unless they affect usability.
And backreading the posts, saying the team should get on it "asap" may come across as demanding.

I think you've got a wrong idea. Here in Germany we say "Wir treffen uns um 17 Uhr", the english translation would be "We'll meet at 17 o'clock". We don't say "Wir treffen uns um Siebzehnhundert", what would be the pendant to your "meet me at 17:00" (read "seventeen hundred)". 24h time format has no military context for us and other countries using this format, for us it also sounds strange when someone says "We'll meet at seventeen hundred" in military movies with german language synchronisation.

I hope I've managed to explain that clearly.

To reinforce that, it is similar in Sweden too.
Using your example, we'd say "Vi ses klockan sjutton", which means "We'll meet at seventeen".
We only pronounce the hour itself if the minute of the hour is zero, otherwise, for example, we'd say "tjugo över sjutton" (twenty minutes after seventeen).

However, nobody says "sjuttonhundra" (seventeen hundred) here either, and I am sure it is very rare to say that in the majority of Europe.

This discussion turned into a complete disaster.

The insulting and political comments about people from certain countries or regions were unacceptable and not allowed in our community. I've removed posts that were along those lines. I've also removed any replies to removed posts so community members can read the thread without getting confused.

I'm not one who is involved in these kinds of decisions, but I do not think that this is something the developers would work on. GrapheneOS developers do fix serious upstream bugs that break UI/UX for our users, but this doesn't seem to be one of those cases. It seems more like something AOSP developers meant to do.

Adding AM/PM to the clock may be easy. Adding a toggle to make it optional may also be easy. GrapheneOS is an open source project, so someone can look into it and submit a PR or open an issue in the issue tracker and ask if a PR for a toggle would be accepted, assuming it meets the project's standards of course.

Keep in mind, though, that merging a PR doesn't mean the job is finished. If the PR is accepted, then the new feature has to be maintained into the future as well. And as de0u pointed out, the code may be updated often, which means additional work for the developers to maintain the change.

Reading through this discussion, it doesn't seem there's much interest in adding AM/PM to the clocks. Members of the development team have lots of work to do and it's not clear that the proposed change would benefit a lot of our users. It may be more work than people realize to add and maintain the change for little benefit.

Anyway, I'm going to restore this thread. Please leave politics out of it and be respectful of others.

Nobody here (in America) says "meet me a 17 o'clock" either. That "English translation" is basically incorrect; this isn't how a German movie would be dubbed for example.

ClickClickDrone but we've gone trough a shift in that in the swedish eighties early nineties we still said 'Vi ses halv fem', 'Let's meet up at half past four', but we've never added something short standardised for am pm.
