Donations to GOS, doubts and questions

Hello everyone, I am a long time gos user.
Since some years I started donating and when I got a couple of salary increases I raised my monthly donation.

It is a couple of months that I am starting to think that maybe I am not putting the correct amount into this.

I currently am transfering around 50 euros per year and recently I started to feel guilty because it doesn't seem that much.

So I wanted to hear from the masses what do you think it is acceptable to donate and what should be the limits (both lower and higher).

I know this is strictly tied to wallets and personalities, and that 1 cent is better than zero, but even if 1 euro each would be already a very good donation goal, I am still wondering what is considered a good amount for this project

nikperel I think that is a good amount. I think the donation amount should be whatever you think you should donate. There really is no "high" or "low" amounts of donations. It really is whatever you can afford to/want to donate. I'm sure the project really appriciates any donations they get, big or small. I currently don't donate to GrapheneOS, because it realistically isn't in my budget at the moment. I'd very much like to, and likely will in the future, but I honestly just can't right now. So in the end, it just comes down to what you want to donate.

It's a good amount. GOS tweeted or mastadoned something about if every user donated 1 USD per month then that'd be a lot of funding.

I want to say sufficient but I don't remember.

I think it is best if everybody here trusts you to find your right balance between helping a distributed security and privacy community on the one hand and helping people in your own community face their day-to-day issues on the other hand.

I donated for the first time today. I sent $15 dollars in Monero when I checked the info app and saw the Moner address. I appreciate how GrapheneOS never cluttered the OS with donation requests, unlike some other projects... Will be cool to see what happens with the info app. Iirc I read they were gonna expand it.

I remember reading that they pay most of their employees with crypto—which is awesome, so, very happy to donate in crypto as well.

I always wonder whether it's worth donating when the amounts needed are so great and whales come in and just donate 1000x what you would be willing to donate, but if there were 1000 non-whales that donated then it equals a whale so, definitely donate to stuff you use and support.

Yea, I feel like if everyone could afford to donate just 1 euro a month, the project would benefit greatly :)

I think I found the answer here:

We hold onto the Bitcoin, Monero and Ethereum. We pay nearly all the project members with cryptocurrency directly. We have to convert Cardano, Litecoin, etc. to Bitcoin or Ethereum occasionally because we don't get nearly enough to use them for transactions. It's getting harder for project members to convert Monero to fiat but some project members only feel safe being paid privately via Monero due to attacks on the project and extreme harassment targeting project members. Donating Monero helps us pay these developers, as long as they can still find ways to convert it to local fiat.

Johnnyloans really? $1 USD is like $1.41 CAD. I may have to become a donator. Like I said, I realistically can't do much right now, but I could do a dollar. Yeah not much, but its a start!

I also REALLY REALLY enjoy installing GrapheneOS. I just love doing it. While its easy to do, I was thinking about installing it for some people and charging some money. I would donate 20% of proceeds to GrapheneOS. Because even though its relatively easy, I know some people still don't have the technical skills to install it or don't have a computer or simply just don't want to install it, so I'd be looking to install for those people. It would be a win for everyone.

I would say even 1 Canadian dollar will contribute to the cause :)

Yeah, there are about 300k - 400k phones using GOS. Don't give more than you can.

I guess this is another very important aspect of helping the community.
Personally I helped some people install GOS irl, both friends I see on daily basis and friends I could help only remotely.
Most of them learned and are indipendent right now.

This experience also showed me that some people stop learning just because.
I run in a couple of "No, I cannot learn how to use it" scenarios, without even trying it. Pity.

That's alright if our intentions don't always align with the outward expression -- you aren't a villain. It's simply a translation error.

It's difficult when interactions are so fast paced. We learn from these moments and improve. Ask for grace when needed and people will understand and appreciate the care you show. A simple: "sorry, when I ... I meant ... and not ..." is oft warmly received.

I'm donating for various entities, including GOS about $4-$5 monthly each, depends on $XMR price (static amount of monero)
