Hello all,

I am close to purchasing the Pixel 7 and migrating to GrapheneOS from iOS. Thought I'd just run the plan past you all in case anyone foresees any problems.

I use Protonmail for email. I anticipate being able to run their mail client, and potentially VPN within a profile.

I use Linux and Firefox as my PC. This rules out the web flasher AFAIK so I will have to go the CLI route. I'm reasonably technically minded, although never flashed a phone before, so hope this shouldn't cause too many challenges.

Unfortunately I will have to install Facebook Messenger within a profile. I'll put WhatsApp in the same profile.

I will have another profile for Signal.

Does this all seem reasonable?

        Teilkasko Having Signal in it's own profile? I guess I won't - I just mean it won't be going in with the Meta apps. But would be happy for it to go with the Proton apps.

            Graphite Thanks, yes I should have clarified that I don't want to install Google software on my PC so if Firefox isn't supported then it's ruled out from my point of view. Cheers.

                Rift9437 Brave or Chromium should do the trick, in case you're interested. I used Brave on Linux to install GrapheneOS.

                One other note - you mentioned planning to get a pixel 7. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd consider a 6 series if I were you for the following reasons:

                1) Limited reports of camera lens cracking/exploding on the 7's. This is likely a manufacturing defect, and could have been limited to a bad batch. Other manufacturers like Samsung have had almost identical issues in the past.

                2) GrapheneOS does not appear to utilize the additional features of the improved camera on the 7 series, even when using the Google camera app. I believe it has something to do with the tensor chip not being utilized fully as it should. There was discussion about this just a few days ago. Don't misunderstand, it will still take good photos, but you will not have the full capabilities of the stock OS, and apparently portrait photos can take an unusually long time to process. This would not be a dealbreaker for me personally, but thought it worth mentioning.

                    Shendai Thanks @Shendai - I'll do some reading up on the Pixel 7 camera lens and the GOS support lifecycle for the 6.

                    FWIW I don't really much trust the privacy credentials of Brave - don't know much about privacy on Chromium to be honest. But hopefully the CLI method should be fine too.
