I don't understand this question, but I am obviously wasting my time here. Perhaps a more patient forum member will chime in and try to explain to you why you should not mess with system apps, why permissions your system needs to function do not imply your device is compromised, and how to do a search on this forum. I give up.

As a general rule, you're achieving nothing by disabling permissions from system apps. The only thing that's going to end up happening is things breaking and us not knowing how to help you fix them, since we won't know exactly what you've changed.

If you trust GrapheneOS, there's no reason to be adjusting permissions or anything else for system apps.

Anyway thanks for that mate makes a bit more sense. I've been at war with permissions I shouldn't be touching I now realise that. Is factory reset my only option? To ensure I haven't disabled something that's going to lead to problems down the line as has been suggested

The "auditing app permissions" approach, for system apps, is probably unproductive. A vast amount of code that ships with GrapheneOS, and that runs with elevated privileges, is not "app" code. Meanwhile, the interactions between various system apps can be non-obvious, so denying permissions to them frequently leads to mysterious failures, perhaps weeks or months after the permissions were removed.

I would do it for good measure, especially if you've enabled developer options and changed any of the defaults there.

Is these system settings not supposed to be hidden? When I go into network permissions this is what I see if I then click the 3 arrows it shows more settings

Is there anything looking our of the ordinary? If these are indeed system settings I shouldn't touch they should stay hidden? The fact there is more settings behind the 3 dots should be concerning?

No, there is zero cause for concern. This is normal and is an extremely common.

No Captive Portal is not hostile and completely normal especially if you're connected to a hotel, airport,or public Wi-Fi network (See Wikipedia.

By all means, do factory reset just to get everything stock again and start from there. The proper advice has already been shared: don't mess with the core components of the OS by adjusting the permissions. The SETTINGS are where you make adjustments. Maybe you don't want to allow sensors by default to 3rd party apps. That's reasonable. Maybe you wanna enable all the exploit protections. A solid choice. But messing with system apps and worrying about shell, of all things....no. Stop that.

You installed GOS for a reason, I presume. You wouldn't buy a bullet proof vest and then take out the plates because you think they are faulty, would you? Are you a bullet proof vest expert? Or course not. Trust the product as you should and simply search up any apps that you are curious about to learn about them...not to tweak their permissions. Just for peace of mind, if you must.
