Airplane Mode Wifi

So I am currently using the WiFi IN airplane mode as the good posters earlier showed me in the Grapheme manual without a sim card.
If I want to have WiFi on the road, my understanding is that I'll need to get one and connect to the network.

Can I continue to use airplane mode on w my data sim giving me WiFi anywhere? In other words, if I am in the car and I want to use the WiFi, what does that look like from a settings perspective?
I understand this may be a long one to answer so thanks to anyone who takes a stab at it.....

You can use WIFI on the road while in airplane mode, and connect to hotspots along your route.

If you want to use a data SIM card, you have to come out of airplane mode to allow your 4G/5G antenna connect to the cell towers and give you data.

If you get a new data only sim card you won't be able to make telephone calls, but you can make calls with apps like signal.
