Delayed notificarions and sometimes no notifications at all

Does anyone who is experiencing this issue have a dynamic notification enabled? One that is constantly running and is constantly updating such as having a timer, or counting down to a specific time of the day every day.

new to GOS here with a Pixel 9a to use SimpleX.

I have SimpleX notification service on (always running in background, unrestricted battery usage)

From what I've been testing (only on wifi so far), SimpleX always wakes up for an incoming call / message as expected (no VPNs).

But setting up a VPN changes this, after around 6 minutes asleep:
Mullvad VPN connected: it doesn't wake up for the call.
Mullvad VPN with Split Tunnel for SimpleX, it doesn't wake up for the call.
Mullvad VPN disconnected, it doesn't wake up for the call.

It seems the mere presence of a VPN setup (even though not connected) will stop it waking up.
Again after removing all VPNs: SimpleX wakes up for a call / message.

I can only guess it's somehow related to Doze and how network interfaces get changed after setting up a VPN?

set your vpn to unrestricted battery use. Maybe set a keepalive timer if it has 1.

Johnnyloans Tried all that before and it makes no difference, and the Android system is the one truly running the VPN service and there's no way to exclude it from optimisation, Mullvad app just sets it up.

And again this is doubly irrelevant because even with the VPN DISCONNECTED it prevents it from being woken up, until the VPN is removed / deleted.

If you're curious about this issue, A few things to try:
if mullvad lets you use a vanilla wireguard app, try that. Then test notificactions or calls

Or try sending notifications other ways where simplex "fails." Send yourself an email for example. Is simplex the only issue? Maybe mullvad is somehow interfering.

For me, with wireguard routing all traffic (0.0.0.0/0), I still get all notifications and calls (airplane mode, wifi on, no cell connection)

Sounds like connections are blocked. You'd have to turn off "block connections without vpn" to allow network use with the vpn disconnected/off.
settings > network > vpn > gear icon > block connections
No need to uninstall mullvad.

Johnnyloans Right now SimpleX is all I have to test, but it doesn't seem to be a SimpleX issue, more of a Doze issue with VPNs and with network interfaces even when VPN is disconnected.

Already tried WG tunnel, no difference.

"Block connections without VPN" is off of course because everything works fine until after sleeping over 6 minutes or so.
