Wondering if I should root my pixel 5 since it is no longer supported anyway

tschetter why do you want to root it, if you negate things twice, it does not make them right. Your device should be up to date and not rooted. If you intend to use it with network, install apps on it and enter private information, you are playing with fire.

tschetter if you want the capabilities root provides, this isn't inherently bad. Just be aware you're asking this in a community who's whole rationale is security and privacy, both of which root negates. But in the context of an old device you don't plan to use for anything except for root activities, there's not an inherent problem with it if it fits your use case. Just be very cautious about what data and Networks this device sees, and what superuser requests you grant. Best of luck regardless.

tschetter By now the device is quite vulnerable to fairly-motivated attackers. If there are ways to use it that don't involve the device having any passwords that it would be bad to have captured, it might still be useful. But at this point it is plausible that a well-resourced attacker a quarter mile away could point a cantenna at the device and extract your home network's Wi-Fi password. Perhaps that's within the risk tolerance.

A EOL pixel is a fine dev toy if you need something for Android, assuming you use it as such

But yeah, I'd recommend only using the device for dev related functions. If you like tinkering and hacking nothing wrong with using old hardware for that, including rooting, just don't use it as an actual device.

Aka, fuck around, that's fun. That's why I have a flipper on my desk, just don't store sensitive information, if connect to the Internet at all.

tschetter you have nothing to be sorry for, frankly his response was pretty uncalled for. I will say that this question would be better to ask in the root community rather than a GrapheneOS forum though, magisk has a huge user base and you'll definitely get any answers you need from them. Good examples are r/magisk and r/androidroot on reddit, good communities for what you're doing. Take care and stay digitally safe my friend.
