What are your tricks in convincing your friends and family to switch over to grapheneOS and privacy based apps?

gta3 My information-theoretic missionary approach have become both simpler and more serious, ever since my dear Europe, gradually and reluctantly realises that we are, if not fully in war-time, certaintly not in peace-times right now. Several of my peers, formerly lazy, recently 'all ears' to e.g. me promoting information hygiene and security mindset.

gta3 This often breaks down to the "I have nothing to hide" argument. Well, we use our mobile phones to organise our sex and business life. And even though you may be "open" almost nobody would want a list of their sex partners and their salary published on a public notice board. But that is exactly what you do when you use Whatsapp or unencrypted email. Maybe those that fear disclosure most are those that earn nothing and never have sex.

The trick is I don't try. I just tell that I use an alternative OS, that is more privacy-respectful and it's called GrapheneOS. Most people don't care and I have to accept it.

No trick involved. The underage kids have to follow the rules of the house. And I pay for it. Other family members that want my support: I order (and flash) their devices. Other people: Just tell them occasionally that you can have a normal user experience with a device that is degoogled by default.

schweizer the "other people" are usually too lazy to make the switch for better because they haven't had first hand experience with the OS and/or haven't seen a real life demonstration how it can positively impact their life. Of course, we know, we have been there, they haven't. So while we are talking about it to them, they go like "Oh yeah, just another flavour of the same, why should I bother when I'm already using it and I don't really believe I can affect anything?"

DeletedUser495 To be realistic it is rare that someone changes their behaviour. But it happens occasionally. It happens when they read/hear/see news about GOS and they get reminded that this is what their friend recommends since years ago. Teenagers start to ask their parents why the family does not care about privacy when obviously there is and alternative. And so on.

Not all seeds turn into a tree but every forest started from seeds.

I guess all you can do is walk your sermon. Sometimes people notice that my five-year old phone is faster and more reliable than their brand-new, cruft-infested one, and they ask why. If people ask me why I don't deal with Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc., then I tell them. Otherwise it's not worth the hassle.

If I wanted to cram my values down other people's throats, I'd start with my veganism ;) At least people understand that, whether they support it or not.
