To actually discuss the subject of the thread here: I just don't think age verification will do much, unless the intent was to ban all minors from social media, which leads into many other questions and also the industry is not trying at all to push for that anyways (they make a lot of money off children, unfortunately).

We aren't really even seeing this with social media in general, but what is considered 'mature', which for Google Play would probably not include anything pornographic if I'm not mistaken (I'm assuming play store doesn't allow such material, been a while since I checked, correct if wrong)

secrec If the will for it is in the thing, I'm not saying that's a given, in principle age verification could be done through checks for presence of a smartcard issued only to adults. This can be checked for authenticity, not by necessity for wich specific adult, only verify 'a adult'.

There is no way out of the necessity to prove who you are to SOMEONE, and that is the fundamental problem. Age verification should be handled client side ONLY. Web services should provide metadata for the client to use in that determination.

secrec It could be as simple as proving a captcha, iff (if and only if) the intention is only checking for age. Now, the real solution also depend on how strict this verification is expected to be, but say, a passcode-like solution doesn't have to be about the entire individual. That said, I get that in reality this is being used for collecting way more than that.

For all the young ones here.... every kid could pass the test to prove that they were an adult. Many adults could not pass.
