New Proton mail + Play Services - FCM Push Notifications

With the Proton mail app new upgrade to 7.x notifications are no longer working with Play services installed. It used to previously work and other FCM notifications still work.
I've looked at past posts and am flummoxed.
Data saver and battery saver is disabled.
Uninstalled and reinstalled. Threw up a new profile with play services and no firewall or VPN.

I know other users with GOS have successful notifications, I installed from github not from playstore.

Could this be part of the issue? Many say they installed from playstore. What other possible causes could there be?

It's always possible that their new GitHub version doesn't support notifications with FCM. Did you try the Play Store version? If that works, you might consider contacting Proton support to hear if they know more about this.

Could that be the case if the signing checksum was the same and playstore wanted to update it?

I don't have another GOS phone to test that on. I was wondering if there might be a registration thing that might be failing or similar. Or something very different.
