Hi everyone. I wanted to make a post detailing my experiences coming back to GrapheneOS after a few years, maybe it will be interesting to some or spark some discussion!
I last used GOS on my Pixel 7 Pro a few years ago. Fast forward to now, I ran the base Pixel OS on my new Pixel 9 for a while. The main reasons I used it was because I was very much attached to Google Wallet, and also because I wanted to test and beta test Android 16 QPR1.
The reason for switching back is because I think privacy for me is more important than running QPR1 or using Google Wallet. I found some ways to get around using Wallet, mainly coming down to just using a magnetically attached pass holder to the back of my phone case which contains some of my cards.
First the positives I've experienced switching back to GOS:
- The ability to set app permissions with more granularity is super nice. It feels great to be able to set up, for example, an app with network permissions (which doesn't actually need it) and then removing the permissions afterwards.
- The features around WiFi/Bluetooth automatically turning off when unused are great.
- Obviously the security aspects. Its great knowing that if I lost my phone it would be a bitch for someone to get into.
- The profiles feature remains really cool and useful.
Some negative aspects and pain points transitioning over from stock Pixel OS:
- Battery drain is worse in GOS. Where I could comfortably finish a day with 20-30% battery remaining, I now barely make it through a day.
- I know this is not a fault of GOS, but notifications not working in most apps if you don't use (Sandboxed) Google Play services really sucks.
- Mobile network connectivity seems slightly worse, though I'm not sure if that's a fault of my provider (I have networking set to LTE+5G). Though LTE and 5G connectivity in my country should be more than excellent and have 100% outdoor coverage.
- Multi-language support for the spellchecker is buggy and often doesn't seem to work. Even though I have two languages as my System Defaults, the spellchecker will seemingly always use the default language (English) and give me red lines when I type in my second language. This happens for both the default keyboard as well as for FUTO Keyboard (which I've also set up for multi-language).
- (minor complaint) Moving data between profiles without using a physical drive or the internet is impossible, which is sometimes really annoying. I know its for security reasons and maybe even impossible to implement. What would be really cool though is if you could designate a 'shared folder' between profiles somehow.
- (minor complaint) Using NFC and turning it on/off through quick settings seems a bit buggy.
General things and experience switching:
- Moving OS is the same as switching phones, except worse in every way since you don't have your 'old device' handy. For me it was a bitch having to back up apps, try not to forget any, and then reinstall them. In particular switching from Signal to Molly caused some annoying issues, and setting up Whatsapp on my play services profile was a bitch. I've switched mostly away from using apps that depend on play services, but its literally impossible to completely stop using it sadly.
- I must admit I miss the user interface and animations from A16 QPR1.
If I think of any other things or encounter anything else I will update this.
Ps: if anyone knows a way or alternative to using Grayjay with Mullvad VPN without having to log in to an account to prevent the 'Login to prove you're not a bot' message, please let me know. I've tried 30 different servers but they all error out and force me to use an alt account for login fallback.
