As someone affected by the same problem, I wonder which one is the lesser evil between getting stuck on a progressively older (and insecure) version of the app or giving in installing the sandboxed GPS. I hate having to make such type of choices... Any suggestions?

santy i have been considering running sandboxed Google play without network access for reasons like this. I don't know enough about the potential downsides to that though, like how and how much google services collects about usage, whether that is accessible/exploitable by other apps, or whether the network permission can ever fail etc. Edit: maybe having Play Services without network can cause problems as apps might register for push notification with Play Services of they see its installed, but then it doesn't have network access

ZoraIsHere Not an expert, but I agree that blocking internet access would stop most (all?) direct attacks.

DeletedUser495 I agree with you as well. I presume that sandboxing should, at least, mitigate the problem. It doesn't seem to be a clear, better approach.

The power button double-click camera shortcut is broken for me as well as the lockscreen camera shortcut. Is that related to this?

Pavestone2734 The same thing happened to me. This is probably because the google camera app is used as the default camera app.

Pavestone2734 this should be unrelated to this issue and should be solvable by opening the current default camera's app settings (not in-app, but OS-wise) and delete its defaults there. Afterwards, activating the camera shortcut via power button should trigger a popup asking which camera app to use.

Same happened to my GOS (on Pixel 8). Primary profile has just compatibility layer, while my secondary profile has Google Play, Store etc.

What seemed to happen is that my secondary profile auto updated gcam to v10, while my main profile still had v9 and it stopped working (just crashed immediately).
Aurora was complaining about, not being able to downgrade my app, because it was seeing the gcam installed on my secondary profile. This seems to be related to the v9 -> v10 update.

Anyway, uninstalled gcam from secondary profile and then manually installed/downloaded version 68469120 via Aurora.

I wonder if the GrapheneOS system app, Pixel Camera Services, can be modified with a mechanism to fool the updated camera app into thinking GPS are installed, without actually needing to install them?

Looks like Graphene has been sucsessful in addressing the issue of Gcam looking for GPS in the past. Perhaps it can be patched again for the latest version of Gcam?

It did not open because ot was disabled in the lockscreen ssecurity settings menu in the owner profile. How that happened is a mistery to me. That setting is only accessible from the owner so I didn't find it at first. My bad.
