My attention has been drawn to this article. With a very alarming tone, they declare that iOS and - for what we're interested in - Android apps are colanders that leak unencrypted data. As far as I understand (I am neither tech nor native English speaker), we are partly protected, through storage scopes. But what seems most concerning to me is the capacity of an attacker to intercept unencrypted traffic.
