Webviews not working anymore

A few weeks ago the pdf viewer and also email rendering in k9-mail stopped working. When using either, I get the following error in logcat:

I have a pixel 4a with all updates installed. Does anybody have an idea how to fix this issue? I would like to avoid setting the phone up from scratch again. Thanks for your help.

skender in theory you are running an unsupported version of GrapheneOS now, so don't expect too much support.

My only guess would be that WebView or TrichromeLibrary might be disabled? Check your app list for disabled (system) apps.

skender It looks like it's not finding the Trichrome Library, suggesting that Vanadium wasn't installed/updated correctly. What happens when you open the GrapheneOS App Store, do you see any updates? If inside it you tap on Vanadium, then under the "Dependencies" heading tap Trichrome Library, is there an install/update button there?

Thanks for the quick response. In Settings -> Apps -> All Apps I only see "Vanadium System WebView" which does not appear to be disabled. I do not see any app named "TrichromeLibrary" or an app with a similar name. I cleared storage and cache of the "Vanadium System WebView" but that didnt help.

skender You're not supposed to see Trichrome Library in the app list. As far as I understand, when it's installed it's considered to be "updating" another app so it doesn't have its own entry in the app list.

The app store lists Vanadium as installed (version 140.0.7339.207.0) with Trichrome Library showing up under Dependencies (Trichrome Library, Shared Library, 94 MB, same version). Is there a way I can reinstall Vanadium?

Note that I completely missed it previously but now noticed you're using an EOL device and an EOL version of GrapheneOS.

I wanted to suggest you to wait for the next OTA update but that's no longer relevant. My next suggestion would be to back up all data you have in the Vanadium browser, and "uninstall updates" for the Vanadium, Vanadium Config, and Vanadium System WebView apps, and then try to update them.

Yes, there is no button to install/update.

Yesterday a new update was available for Vanadium (now at version 141.0.7390.43.1) which I installed.
This fixed the issue

Both, email preview in k9-mail and the pdf viewer work again.

skender with that being said, it's time to upgrade mate, even if you have to spread the cost. Using GrapheneOS on outdated device is just as bad as using any other outdated flea ridden device. If only we are to stop hearing from users who can't be bothered or can't afford to upgrade their devices complaining there is something wrong with their dusty brick.
