Will Material 3 Expressive come to GrapheneOS?

Hello all,

I was looking into GrapheneOS and trying to find time to pull the plug and switch. Today I updated my Pixel 6 to stock (Google's) September version. And I hate the design, the quick settings panel, notifications, everything... Just awful for my taste.

So my question is, will GrapheneOS get the same design or does AOSP use non-Google designs or maybe there is a toggle to not use it?

If GrapheneOS will need to switch over as well, then I will go into the good old XDA forums and try to find a good rom (not particularly for my device, I'm willing to buy a new device (yes I hate the design that much))

All aosp based roms will get the new design, if it becomes part of aosp.

@Palmodive I asked the same question and @ed the Graphene account, and this is what they said:

Android 16 QPR1 hasn't been released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). There's only a stock Pixel OS release. We obtained the full source code the kernel and kernel drivers but don't have the rest and can't begin porting without it. Our OEM partner can likely provide us with early access to major Android releases soon but we don't have it yet and therefore the port isn't even started. We can't provide any timeline on when Android 16 QPR1 will be released to AOSP. We can't port to something that's not released or available to us early yet. This is the first time since we started GrapheneOS in 2014 that a major Android release has not been pushed to AOSP within a day. The last time would have been Android 3 which was not open sourced.

Earlier this month Google said they're releasing the code to AOSP within the "next few weeks". As soon as that happens, GOS can be updated based on QPR1 and that includes the new visual designs. I don't think anyone's interested in putting in the massive amount of work needed to implement non-standard theming for the whole system, as an alternative

That may not be accurate and may be optomistic. I don't recall an original source other than (or better than) Android Authority. A direct quote attributed to a specific Google employee would be interesting.
