Android Auto "temporary Wi-Fi" popup on connection

My phone connects just fine to Android Auto headunits via Bluetooth, but when it tries to connect to WiFi I have to manually approve it every time.

I've tried reinstalling and giving it every permission under the sun, but I cannot make it properly connect automatically.

Any tips on how to fix this?

Really, nobody else is facing this?

The issue persists on multiple devices, and with every single Android Auto unit I try connecting to.
I even tried reinstalling my 7 Pro to see if that solved it, but no.

vodka would be helpful if you included other variables about your phone like:

are you running a VPN?
do you have block connections without VPN enabled?

I do run a vpn, but with split tunneling for Android Auto, and I do not have block connections without VPN enabled.
I have ofc completely turned off the VPN when testing this, and the issue persists.
It also persist on a separate device from my main device, which never had a VPN installed.
It also happens on any Android Auto device I try, even in my friends cars where they have zero issues with their non-Graphene Android phones.

The issue also just randomly happened, everything was working just fine then just suddenly one day (back sometime in june) this issue started happening.

I still have this issue, and I am still just as confused as to why nobody else has this.

I have tried a completely fresh install on my 7 Pro and this happens with a completely 100% stock config.

It happens with every device I have, and any and all cars I have tested this with.

The temporary android auto networks are not saved here no.

Norman Just making sure, you are using Android Auto installed through the grapheneOS app store? This is the mirrored version that you can set wireless AO permissions on via a toggle.

Absolutely, I've been using GrapheneOS for years, and the Android Auto implementation since day1 it was released.
This issue only started happening out of nowhere sometime around june this year.

vodka reinstalling Android Auto and going to Sandboxed Google Play settings -> Android Auto -> Allow permissions for wireless Android Auto, enable this. I have everything else except for audio rerouting disabled.

I'm assuming you've tried this but just putting something out there.

In the Android Auto screen for Sandboxed Play settings you can also go to Android Auto settings -> Start Android Auto while locked and enable this.
In this screen you can also try adding your car with 'Connect to a vehicle'.

If none of this works, maybe you'll have to create a GitHub issue for this, or look elsewhere online as it may be an upstream AOSP issue?

Yeah I've tried all of these things, on my Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 9A and now also my Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
All 3 devices have been tested both with stock OS and GrapheneOS, it does not happen on stock, and happens to all 3 devices on GrapheneOS, and on any car I try it with.
I've tried it on 5 different cars, and on all 5 of them stock OS worked perfectly on whichever one of my 3 devices I tested with, but not with GrapheneOS.

Looking this up a little online it seems this popup also happens on PixelOS and is not specific to GrapheneOS. The reason for it however is unknown to me...

Since you're using Wi-Fi Direct to connect to Android Auto maybe something is broken there and needs resetting?
The only thing I can think of is going to Settings -> System -> Reset options -> Reset Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, though this will also erase all your remembered networks and such.

Since it happens on multiple devices don't think it's related to this.

Can also go to Network preferences -> Wi-Fi Direct when connecting to Android Auto, manually selecting the temporary network to see if it remembers it/auto connects?

Do you have a pre-existing Wi-Fi connection when connecting to Android Auto?
Is your Wi-Fi toggled turned on when connecting to Android Auto? Maybe it is asking for permission to toggle on Wi-Fi...

Also in the message that pops up mentions 'carplay'. If the car also has Apple Carplay, can you switch off that functionality somehow? So that it only uses Android Auto. That may also be a cause for an issue.

If none of this works I guess Github it is.

Yeah I'm gonna do some A/B testing with the stock OS and GrapheneOS and pull some logs, and make a github issue for it.

I just don't understand why others aren't reporting the same issue, I've only seen one other report here on the forum of this with GrapheneOS, but I can perfectly replicate it with all 3 of my devices, and any car with Android Auto I try it with. And why it just suddenly started happening randomly in june.
