I'm unaware of a country banning specific phone models. There are countries that force you to register
your IMEI after a certain period, but that's a different thing. In such case you can stick with Pixels, which
will be supported until the end of 2032 if we are talking about the 10.

No smartphone currently has the level of security and privacy that GrapheneOS offers, so it's natural that none have been banned. AFAIK the closest scenario is the banning of Google's search engine in China (and possibly other countries). Governments around the world are becoming pro-surveillance and more authoritarian. I also want to point out that a future device would not be created if no one, including the developers, discussed it.

I believe that Pixel phones running GOS have already caught the eye of authorities, such as in Germany and Catalonia. A user here once linked a document to a court case in Germany where law officials noted that GrapheneOS phones are impossible to crack

If it were to transpire that a specific device were shipped with GOS, various governments may eventually move to ban it as it becomes more well-known. Ordinary people wouldn't care about privacy, so it has to be a part of a popular series. This way, the backlash would be a stronger deterrent. A phone that ships with GOS may be branded as a tool for criminals by authorities despite being misguided because it embodies the effort to circumvent surveillance and is one that actually works.

Okay this thread has received some editing and pruning due to the escalating nature of the replies and the definitive over prospective claims.

While it is understandable to have some concerns, especially since the UK looked to break Apples advanced protection. Where enough pressure is brought to bear this can be reversed as it has been there.

Also while some nations have taken to placing embargos on trade with specific companies, users have and continue to find ways of importing devices such as Huawei and Pixel devices in territories where they aren't officially supported.

So while hypothetically the discussion has merits for the forseeable future this does not appear to be a major concern for us as the devices can/will be retailed like Pixels in an umaltered GrapheneOS free state as required.

I will leave the discussion alone for now but if it devolves again it will be locked.

MetropleX Thanks, I was worried because even if it's possible to get around embargos, there would be a somewhat significant hurdle for users to do so, especially in some regions which aren't as well-connected (in terms of trading routes) and with stricter laws. Nevertheless, I'm glad to know that they will ship 'unaltered', so to speak and I appreciate your insight

Since GrapheneOS will be the primary operating system for these phones, will problematic apps like banking apps be able to run without restrictions?

Hat The mod above says that these phones will ship in a "GOS free" state so presumably their 'primary' operating system will be what the general public uses, since GOS users are a minority

Because they are Android partners and are therefore blessed by Google.

Another mod replied in this thread and from the answer I guess GrapheneOS must partner with Android to run banking apps without any compatibility issues

That's not what was said or implied. It doesn't need to be GrapheneOS, e.g. it could be some existing OEM.

wizoatk I see... it's practically the same thing to me whether it's the OEM or the OS dev team itself who partners with Google but I can see how it could come across that way. Of course, I don't know how all these negotiations work so my conclusions might be a little lacking when viewed from other perspectives
