Stock File Manager problem locating files

Hi, 9a all up to date.

I have been using an OS notepad app, varlog unote on the old 4a for years. I just installed it on the 9a and it is working fine -- except I cannot copy the 4a data file that unote defines the Path for.

it stores the data file
/android.data/files/...

I can navigate to it and see it. But, I want to copy my existing data file from the 4a to the 9a.

I have copied the 4a data file to a Folder I created on the 9a. All good.

When I select the file and "copy to..." I can only navigate to
/android/media
"media" is the only option, "data" is not there to navigate in to. I have "show hidden" set so I don't think that's the issue.

How do I copy the file to where I want it o the 9a? The 4a was happy to let me do it.

Do I need a better file manager and if so, what?

Try to copy your files over PC via USB. The USB file transfer has another permissions, so it can work.

Otherwise -> ADB.

Thanks, but that's not the issue. The file on the 4a has dozens, maybe hundreds of notes that I need to transfer to the 9a. Transfers worked fine on the 4a as I was able to transfer from an earlier phone than the 4a.

But -- I have transferred the file to the 9a and when I try to copy or move it to the unote data folder (path in OP) the "data" folder is no longer visible to get to "/data/unote/files/filexxxx"

Yes, 4a exports and 9a imports to the folder I created. The problem is that unote has it's own folder under /android/data/unote/files"

if I navigate to "/android" there are 3 folders there.
"/android/data"
"/android/media"
"/android/obb"

I can open "/android/data" and see the FULL unote folder.-tree to the place where unote looks for the file.

When I use "copy to..." and navigate to "/android/" NOW there is only ONE folder there "/android/media" The "data" folder is NOT VISIBLE nor is the "obb" one so I cannot save the 4a file where unote needs it in "/android/data/unote/files/file-here.db"

The 9a is blocking me from accessing the "android/data/...." folder-tree for copy!

I just tested this for you on my Pixel 8, same result: the GrapheneOS Files app doesn't let you move or copy anything into the Android/data/ or Android/obb/ directory trees.

If you're familiar with adb shell, you can do it that way; just tested it and it works. ~~Otherwise, I guess you're out of options.~~

Edit: I observed the same behaviour on a non-GrapheneOS device, and then I remembered the solution: you have to open a second window of the file manager through its menu > New window. Then show them on top of each other with the split screen function, with the Android/data/... folder open in one, then you can drag your file there from the other and it will be copied.

{sigh} that worked, but unote will not let me open it as it is grayed out.

I think I will have to carry the old 4a as well until there is a fix for this and the USB-thing in my other post. Also just learned that lineageos (thus /e/os) doesn't have a 9a version yet.

Thanks, but that's another issue I am having with the 9a. I have managed to use the USB on one PC so will give that a try.

OK, that worked kinda.
I uninstalled and reinstalled unote that created a new empty unote file.
filled in a note
Exported it
I connected the 9a via USB on PC with the original 4a note file.
Using the PC file manager I was able to copy the 4a file to the unote folder.
I deleted the new unote file I had just I created on the 9a
I renamed the 4a file as the one I had just deleted.
Unplugged the USB and started unote and finally the old 4a file with everything in it.

/android/data doesn't allow user to write inside it.
You can only read it.

Your app allow export/import. Use it properly.

There is no issue here.
