What to do with old phone after switching to iOS?

I'm swapping to an iPhone, it is quite difficult to live in the U.S. without iMessage and working tap-to-pay. Is there anything I can use my Pixel 8 with GrapheneOS for? I've seen some cool server usecases but those all require a rooted device, which I am not willing to do.

I'm not going to criticize your decision to switch, but this statement is just silly. I've lived in the US my entire life, never used iMessage or tap-to-pay (with a phone). Same for at least half the people I know.

If you really feel life is too difficult without these luxuries, then I hope you never encounter any real difficulties.

Tap-to-pay, maybe what the hell does it matter if you use iMessage or not? All my family have iPhone except one, and we group chat fine. Yeah pics suck, but that's not unusable.

GrouchyGrape iMessage is not E2EE by default. You have to opt in iCloud encryption, and I doubt most iOS users even know what that is or how to do it.

Elgoog for my personal communications, I tell people they can either contact me via signal or not at all, basically. Outside of family, most aren't willing.

However, I also carry an iPhone so I'll occasionally use that for imessage/facetime

This sounds really odd.... Why can't you live without tap to pay? Can't you just pay for everything with cash? I am in the US, that is what I do. Much easier and more private. I haven't used banking in years. For iMessage, just switch to Signal instead.

Yallweird tap to pay could be with bank's physical card, nfc ~~wallet~~ wearable etc, doesn't need to be phone, so OP can use those.

While paying with cash is more private it comes with unexpected drawbacks:

In thw UK, if you want to rent it'll be a nightmare, at-least in my experience. Every estate agency acting on behalf of the landlord/landlady will ask for bank statements. I have several and whenever I tried giving them the ones with no/a very few transactions they rejected it and wanted to see the ones which has grocery shopping etc. If don't give them that, they'll not force you but you are effectively off their candidate list. They say it's for money laundering checks and what not.
Same for many other things in life
Many small retailers don't have exact change so you'll incur loses over time
Card only tills far outnumber the cash-also tills - you will be in a big queue stuck behind pensioners trying to work their way through the machine (where I live it's mostly old folks who use cash).
Miss out on the proof of payment etc sp in cases of disputes or private sellers.

Using cash is mostly discouraged these days, you'll be going against the flow. Ofc none of this might be applicable to you (now), in that case probably ok

Its discouraged by the authoritarians who want to track and control everyone. If you care about privacy at all you should be using cash when possible and encouraging family and friends to do likewise.

Go with a different rental agency, say "I don't have/use a bank account", don't go through a property manager, pay your landlord in cash. That's what I do, pay cash.

Untrue. Never seen this happen. But even if its pennies who cares? If anything I've seen small retailers are great at cash keeping. You also lose money to card transaction fees.
Go to another business, be patient, or cut in front of them. If business favors card, vote with your wallet.
Ask for a receipt.

These are all just excuses that banks and authoritarians use. None of these so called benefits are worth it.

I've used cash for years and never used bank, the few times its been an issue for me I take my business elsewhere or have someone else pay for me and I give them cash. Preferably the former. I even pay all of my bills in cash, don't let the very slight convenience it may add in some scenarios let you sacrifice this much privacy!

I don't see it that way, assuming your "at all" means "even slightly". You can care a lot about privacy and still compromise in places where you deem if you didn't would make life miserable.

If you " only" care about privacy however, sure go the extra mile.

Would I like to live in a society and vote for govt that focuses on privacy? Use sim operator who doesn't track me or share info with 3rd parties? Absolutely. But we aren't there yet.

To live with the hassle of using cash in order to get some mondo points on being a certified "private" - nope. I gave a few disadvs and there are a lot more depending on which country or which part of a country you live in etc.

Tap to pay might seem convenient, but all modern bank Credit cards have wireless pay function, so instead of holding your phone against the machine, simply tap it with your bank card.

I personally have an iPad for banking and I have no need to have a banking app on my phone.

If people don't message me because they don't want to install Signal or send a SMS, I'm fine with that. Obviously what they want to tell me isn't important, otherwise they would take actions.

Shops that can't give out exact change aren't trustworthy, so I shop elsewhere. If you run a business and accept cash, you need change money. If they can't or don't want to work correctly, I will not buy or only in an emergency once and then never ever again.
