Google maps does not show map, but routing works

Hi, I'm trying to make GMaps working on GOS. (Yes, I have tried alternative mapping apps, and I regret that).
My problem is that GMaps normally works fine, but only for about a week after clearing storage, then the maps starts disappearing, usually in the area where I live. Sometimes if I zoom in and out multiple times, it will show something, but no details. Zooming in on distant areas makes the map appear and disappear on various zoom levels, but usually also there is not much detail. I can fix it by clearing storage and cache (cache alone does not work), but then I have to configure it again, and it will do the same a few days after.

Strangely enough, position, routing and navigation keep working fine, but it's hard to use, because I can't see roads :)

Earlier I thought it was related to offline maps, because one time I saw it showed a notification that it was updating offline maps, and the map broke just after that. But today it broke again and there aren't any offline maps downloaded in the app.

GMaps has got permissions to location, network, notifications and sensors. I have tried enabling Exploit protection compatibility mode and disabling hardened memory allocator, but it didn't change anything.
I'm on Pixel 9 and up to date Graphene OS.

Not sure whether this issue has been caused by GOS, but my wife on stock OS (different phone) does not have any problem with GMaps.

Kaziq I believe this was fixed a while ago so make sure you have the OS, GmsCompat, Google Play, and Google Play Services all up to date.

If not fixed after doing that or confirming that they're all up to date, then clear Google Maps' storage in Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Maps > Storage & cache

other8026 Thank you for confirmation that it's a real issue, and not only my bad luck with phones :)

I think I'm up to date. GOS version is 2025080600, GOS App Store does not show any updates. I'm not sure how to update GmsCompat (Only GmsCompatConfig shows up in the GOS App Store).

I will clear the storage then and see if it won't break again after a few days.

I am facing the same issue. Everything up to date, cache cleared, phone restart, unfortunately nothing helped. Funny thing: if I change the view to "satelite" everything is correctly shown.

It has been the same for me, all up to date, storage+cache cleared several times (P8P if it matters). Clearing cache works for a bit before things vanish again.

The only thing that has been consistently working thus far has been the incognito mode - that shows everything. But of you lose out on offline maps etc as they aren't (AFAIK) available in incognito mode.

Unfortunately yesterday it broke again for me. Seems like the problem is not fixed, or there is something wrong/not up to date with my phone.

I had this as well (fully updated P8P). Clearing storage worked for now.

I'm pretty happy right now more people have this problem.
Not working on my Pixel 8 Pro since three month now.
Everything is up to date, cache is cleared. I even tried exploit compatibility mode and reinstalling the App. Nothing works. We'll have to wait for a bug fix from the devs I guess.

At least one user in the previous thread said that they had this problem on Calyx OS, too, so it's not an issue specific to GOS. It sounds like problem is the same as it was months ago when the previous thread started: resetting all all storage fixes it, but only for a while. Then you need to reset it again. We tried in the other thread to maybe narrow down to specific use cases that cause the problem, but we didn't have much luck. It happens to people that use Android Auto, people that don't use AA, people that do and don't use location sharing, people that do and don't use incognito mode, etc. It seems like it just happens to certain people with no obvious explanation of why.

FWIW, I had once tried installing Maps without Play Services with a similar outcome. Everything was pretty much working in the background; there were just blank tiles though.
I strongly suspect that Google has somehow outsourced Maps functionality to Play Services. Stock Android also runs both apps privileged, so even that may be a factor.
Working theory? The view has to be updated from time to time which on stock Android happens automatically, while on GrapheneOS this fetching fails for some reason, leaving you with blank tiles, unless you "force" it by resetting the app/clearing cache.

Same here. Always used to work. Since around 10days, it doesn't. Clearing cache has fixed it for now, let's see for how long.

So I have a P7a and P8a. The P8a has the described issue, the P7a does not. The differences:

P7a: GMaps installed on private space via Aurora Store. Not logged in to Google account
P8a: GMaps installed on main profile via Play Store. Logged in to Google Account.

Both running always on the latest GOS Stable Release. Maybe that helps to find a solution besides clearing up storage space.

I have also encountered this issue following a boot-loop issue with a Pixel 9---when I was able to restart the phone, I could get directions with GMaps but I am not able to see any roads/the map. Prior to my phone dropping to 0%, GMaps was fully functional.

Clearing the storage and cache didn't work for me.
But installing Google Play Store solved the Problem for my configuration.

I can confirm this. Maps had the issue of the map not showing on a second profile, but seemed to work fine on my main. Installing the play store to the second profile fixed it.

I haven't had this issue for about a month now. Wonder what happened.
