Contacts issue on Pixel 9A

Got the new 9A and installed Graphene OS without any big issues. Installation of all possible apps was also a success and all seems fine except the contacts....

I imported the contacts in .vcf format and they show up just fine under the contacts widget icon. I can also call by selecting contact info from this widget. But, when I select the call widget (on the left lower corner), my contacts are empty. If I try to add a contact from this call widget, it will not show up there - this new contact will appear in the other contact list that I originally imported.

The main issue is that when I receive a call, it shows only the caller number, not the contact that I have in my imported list of contacts.

I've tried to delete the imported contacts, import again but the problem remains. Whatsapp shows the contacts correctly and so does Signal. Any clues how to fix this frustrating issue?

The current GrapheneOS dialer app is not as flexible about the formatting of numbers as some other things. I gather that in some countries extra digits are dialed in some circumstances, such as a 0 or a 9, for some numbers but not others. The dialer app expects to find the same number in the database that the carrier sends to the phone, and does not do further lookups based on adding digits.

Some people use third-party dialer apps.

I found out the reason. In app settings, phone did not have permission for contacts. First time I tried it but system did not allow it. There is a setting for 'contact scopes' - turn it off and then contacts can be set to allow for phone.

After this, it works. Took the whole day to resolve this....
