Android Auto voice recognition stopped working

I have GrapheneOS on a Pixel 8, and I got Android Auto with voice recognition working about 2 months ago. Today I noticed that it isn't working any more, when I click the car button or the android auto screen voice button, it just gives a "Voice commands aren't available right now" toast message.

I tried uninstalling Android Auto, the Google App, and Speech Recognition and Synthesis from Google, and then reinstalling everything, but am still getting the same result.

Build number is 2025080600

Anyone have any ideas? Is this related to the new Graphene build?

Can confirm, same behavior on my device. Started about 1-2 weeks ago, cant pinpoint the exact point in time nor a specific update to the system or apps. But the ability to issue voice commands via the microphone button or any hardware button results in the error message "Voice commands aren't available right now".
Interestingly, invoking the Assistant App and issuing commands there does work. But that isn't feasible in a moving vehicle, of course.

I too am having this issue. It seemed to start when Google changed the way they make their source code available around the upgrade to Android version 16.

Thanks for the directions. I downgraded to an older version an disabled automatic updates in playstore I'm using 16.26.71.ve.arm64 (301550874). Working fine now.

It turns out that this version is actually the last working version (16.26.71.ve.arm64 (301550874)) and only navigating works. Texting for example opens a prompt to update the google app.
I hope this will be fixed soon.

A couple of life changes means ill be in the car a lot, was hoping to start using voice controls for Spotify, Waze, and SMS

Getting an error "google app needs to be installed from the play store" (in the Sandboxed Google Play: Android Auto settings area) after installing an older version of the google app

Same deal for me on a Pixel 8. Voice commands on Android auto stopped working a while back and no settings I change seem to fix

Installing version 16.26.71.ve.arm64 also worked for me
