ijk Just an update on further testing:
If I follow the steps from /u/vawtair I can get it to stop charging at 80% 1 time. I think if I interpret their paragraph after step 4 as instructions, I can get it to work on subsequent plug ins without rebooting if I toggle the switch before unplugging, and again after plugging in.

Phone trying to charge to 100% (>80%)
Unplug and turn off charging optimization
Reboot phone
Plug in charger
Turn on charging optimization
Turn off charging optimization - stops at or above 80%
Unplug charger
Plug in charger
Turn on charging optimization - stops at or above 80%

Seems to me the fuel gauge/battery management system is calibrated, but the device isn't respecting the toggle under most normal conditions without the reboot/toggle procedure.

These could be further simplified: In the state after step 3 (reboot with charging optimization disabled), if only plugging in charger with charging optimization disabled, enabling charging optimization later with charger online could stop charging at or above 80%.

Thus, in the state after step 3 (reboot with charging optimization disabled), DO NOT plug in charger with charging optimization enabled, or the phone will go back to the "charging beyond 80% with charging optimization enabled" state, until it completes a fully charge to finally stabilize the "charging optimization" state, BRFORE the next reboot.

Updated to 2025112101, after a full charge my pixel 8 will stop charging on 80% with charging optimization enabled, but the calibration seems cleared during every reboot. If

after reboot, my pixel 8 will always try to calibrate again by charging beyond 80%, regardless of whether a calibration has already been done before reboot.

Furthermore, this result is likely even to survive beyond rebooting, probably suggesting that a persistent calibration result might be generated.

We might be able to summarize that, if the phone falls in the state "charging beyond 80% with charging optimization enabled", disabling charging optimization, rebooting, and making a fully charge with charging optimization disabled could resume expected functionality of charging optimization.

On 2025091000, after rebooting and plugging in charger with charging optimization disabled (identical to the state of this) to charge to 100%, I rebooted my phone at this state, and then plugged in charger with charging optimization enabled, my pixel 8 seemingly went back to the "charging beyond 80% with charging optimization enabled" state, and kept charging even reaching 100%, but after I unplug the cable and plug again (on 100% charge), the shield icon appears and the expected functionality of charging optimization is restored, which survives beyond further rebooting.

Sadly, after upgrading to 2025091000, rebooting and plugging in charger with charging optimization enabled, my pixel 8 goes back to the "charging beyond 80% with charging optimization enabled" state. It seems the system upgrade cleared the persistent calibration result. I may have to perform a fully charge with charging optimization disabled to regenerate it later, as I am used to charging my pixel 8 full before excursions by temporary disabling charging optimization.

I don' t know whats going on with version 2025091000 my Pixel charges to 100% all the time so far. On current builds it stopped all the time at 80%.

At least I get the badge on the battery icon.

xxx You should keep the feature on. If you turn it off it'll always go to 100% without pass-through charging. If turned on it'll maybe sometimes stop at 80% and do pass-through charging at both levels.

In the past week my phone has charged to 100% several times with battery optimization enabled. I do think something is broken.

vontroxler Same here on my Pixel 8a. It all started after one of the recent updates. In the past week the phone was charged multiple times until 100% until the shield icon appeared, but despite that it doesn't stop charging at 80%. I then tried some of the suggestions made in this thread to solve it, but still the same issue.

vawtair On another thread someone said a recent update made it so that it calibrates after every reboot now.
