Recommendation on tablet

Hey everyone,

I'm on the hunt for a new tablet and would love your recommendations! I saw that the Google Pixel Tablet only has support until 2028, which feels a bit short. Are there any plans to support other tablets down the line?

Also, do you think it’s better to go for a tablet from another brand that can run something like /e/ (to have a secure device without google default apps)?

KernelKnight I'm in exactly the same pisition: I would like a GOS tablet, but 3 years' support seems too little. I'm thinking that a reconditioned tablet might be cheap enough to be worthwhile, especially if I could get it without the dock.

KernelKnight I think if you read around on /e/, meaning sources not from /e/ or journalists repeating claims without verification, it might not be so clear it's a high-security ecosystem.

For example, do they have a record of staying on top of security patches?

If you dont want to get a pixel tablet your next best option is to get an ipad.
Currently there are no other tablets that meets GrapheneOS hardware standards.

Regarding an iPad being the next best thing to Pixel Tablet running GOS, I see that Apple typically provides 7 or 8 years' worth of security updates for its tablets. But if, like me, you're likely to buy an older-generation product (I really don't need the latest, greatest hardware for my intended uses), then your iPad may not be supported for a terribly long time either. I haven't yet worked out the trade-off between cost and duration of support, but it's a factor making me think I might swing for a Pixel Table rather than compromising on an iPad.

Elgoog After looking at the costs and support durations, the iPad 11 seems like the better option . The cheapest one i found was €359 and with an expected update lifespan of about 7 years, it breaks down to around €51 per year.

In contrast, the cheapest Pixel Tablet costs around €440 and with the shorter period of security updates about 3 years, which brings the annual cost to around €146.

KernelKnight Thank you for the very cogent analysis. Applied in my market it drives me to the same conclusion: the iPad seems the better deal, even if it doesn't offer quite the same privacy as the Pixel on GOS.

KernelKnight I need to modify my assessment of the economics, given that I want a keyboard/case and stylus in addition to the tablet itself. Those two additional items from Apple cost nearly as much as the standard 11-inch iPad A16, whereas for the Pixel they can be had for a fraction of its price.

Daily Pixel Tablet user here. Really hoping they cone out with the Tablet 3 (Tablet 2 development, as it was, got canceled). If not, my backup plan is probably a Pixel Fold with GOS.

I would love a decent tablet with Android app compatibility. Does anyone know if there is a different model that's worth looking into at this moment?

Not if your goal is privacy.

If you don't care about privacy for your tablet, Samsung is considered to have one of the best android tablet line ups.
