Just a general reply to all you have written, which I have read with interest.
I would also love to believe that there is a way for tech to be both sustainable and fair AND have top-notch data security and privacy, but I'm very disappointed by the various developments esp. in smartphones. Initially I thought I'm done with smartphones and would rather use a dumb phone than use stock Android ever again, or pay for an overpriced, over-hyped unfairly/unsustainably manufactured iPhone or consider a Pixel released by one of the worst offenders in data privacy and security. But dumb phones are even worse. I wish there was some sensibly made secure and private dumb phone. Punkt of Switzerland isn't exactly a strong contender.
And then I read these comments here about Fairphone, a company that I never really trusted in the first place as they used stock Android and their phones may be fairly sourced, but I also found them wastefully large. Doesn't large also mean more natural resources used? (I may be naive to think like this, but that's my first thought fwiw)
Jack ports are gone too and for what? For us to buy bluetooth devices? So more resources used, more batteries, and also bluetooth itself is a security concern as far as I can tell.
And now I'm about to buy a used Pixel and install GOS on it. But also, it will probably have to be a cheaper one as Pixels themselves have some issues which I really did not expect before I started looking into them. But it is what it is, a used Pixel with GOS is probably the best option for me, even if it comes with compromises.
I have already considerably reduced and rationalised my phone use, and to be honest, I'm not entirely sure I'll always be able or willing to use a smartphone if the current trends continue... not least because certain authorities in certain countries/blocs will insist on backdoors in every device compromising our security and privacy.
