Password Issue.

So. My brother installed GrapheneOS on my phone, and I decided to change my passcode after a while. I turned it on and off again a few times and it worked, so then I took a shower and picked my phone up again after. I made sure I memorized it correctly, but by now I've tried more than 20 passwords that all failed. What can I do? I saw someone say to hold down the volume button while grapheneOS is loading, but that just opens into Safe Mode, which still needs the PIN.

My fingerprint is still on the phone, if that helps.

I would say, especially if you have data on there that you would like to keep, to just give it some time. It is either mis-entered or mis-remembered, and giving your brain time to leave and come back to it might be fruitful.

If this isn't the case and you would like to factory reset, you can do that from recovery. To get there, reboot the device and hold volume down immediately after the phone screen turns off. When it displays "Fastboot mode", use the volume buttons to change the selection to "Reboot to recovery", then power button to confirm the choice.

It will reboot to a screen displaying the laying down Android mascot. On that screen, press and hold power, and click volume up once while you hold power. It should now display the Recovery GUI where you can select "Factory reset" and use the power button to confirm.

Khanate I did basically the same thing when I first installed GrapheneOS on a 3a: I picked a PIN, tried it a few times, then went back to preparing the data on my old phone for export. Then it turned out that I didn't remember the PIN.

Since you asked: the fingerprint, which is a secondary unlock method, works only after the primary unlock method.

Going forward, I think it might be a good idea to write down the new password, and not eat the paper until at least lunch time the next day.

I prefer to shut the device off entirely, then once its shut down, to press the power and up volume key. Easier to do than in reboot

Btw, I've found a way to circumvent the really long PIN input cooldown, which is restarting the phone and putting in a password before it brings the cooldown up again. But I'm not sure if that password will work, even if it is correct, because the phone remembers the cooldown. Does anyone know?

This does not actually give you another attempt, even if it appears that way. If you test it on a device where you know the PIN/password, you'll notice that entering the correct PIN/password after a reboot and with the timer not having reached zero, will still fail even if it's the correct PIN/password.
