Corrupted Device and "Media Picker keeps stopping"

A couple days ago my Pixel 8 ran out of battery. It took a while to restart after charging but it eventually came back up and worked fine for a day. This morning I woke up to find that the device apparently crashed and is corrupted. It can reboot but then can't access any files. When it succesfully boots I get a "media picker keeps stopping" error immediately after unlocking. If I switch to my user where I have google apps installed, all the apps seem to generate errors and the device crashes shortly. I have tried sideloading an update just in case, but that didn't fix anything. Any ideas what I can do aside from factory reset? There is user data I have not backed up and would like to recover if possible.

hlxx Is the storage full? (I'm making a wild guess here).

Try booting into safe mode to see if the problem persists there. (Just hold down the "Restart" button in the power menu).

The storage could be full, the storage page in settings showed only half of it was being used but that doesn't seem reliable. The files app just shows "can't load content at the moment." I was able to boot into safe mode but the problems persisted there. I tried to uninstall some user apps to see if that helps at all, now the device has crashed, bootlooped a bit, and is now stuck on the grapheneOS logo.

hlxx The symptoms described sound like serious file system corruption, which is consistent with, though not necessarily due to, storage failure. Flash storage fails faster if it is used more heavily, such as lots of large downloads onto the device or lots of video recording.

You indicated the issues began not long after the battery ran flat. Was that the first time, or has that happened repeatedly? File system corruption can happen without storage failure, and power crashes can be a cause.
