Nintendo released an update to Super Mario Run in November, and I can no longer play the game. It tells me I need to update the game to play, and in the Play store it gives me the error "This app isn't compatible with your device anymore."

I assume this is a Nintendo thing and not a GrapheneOS thing, right? So I'm just SOL? I just can't ever play this game again that I paid for?

1e2j6 I'd first see about following that up with their (Nintendo) support to get a more detailed reason of the compatibility error.
Taking a quick look at the game it appear that they may have region locked it and depending on VPN and location services, it may block you if it can't tell if you're in one of those regions.

1e2j6 Hi there, sorry to hear you're having trouble with this - let's see if we can figure it out.

I'm assuming you're installing this app from the Play Store, so let's try the following:

      1. Uninstall the app
      2. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Install unknown apps > enable "Allow access to Android/obb folder"
      3. Install the game once more.

      Does that make a difference?

        Wibble_Wobble I'm in the US, so I don't think it's a region problem.

matchboxbananasynergy I had that setting checked before I installed the game. I think if I uninstall it, I won't be able to install it again at all, since the Play Store isn't letting me update it.

I know in the past that Nintendo did not let you use this app on a rooted phone, but GrapheneOS does not root your phone permanently does it?

1e2j6 GrapheneOS doesn't root your phone at any point. What you're most likely referring to is SafetyNet / Play Integrity API which apps can use to disallow people from using an app on a non-Google certified device.

This doesn't seem to be the case with this game, as I had someone who owns that game look at it, and it works fine for them on GrapheneOS, albeit on a Pixel 6.

That led me to think that the game might be 32bit, and Pixel 7 devices are incompatible with that, but they've confirmed the game is 64bit.

Is the game on your owner profile? In that case, we can try something.

          1. Create a new user profile.
          2. Install Sandboxed Google Play on the second profile.
          3. Go back to the owner profile, Settings > System > Multiple Users > Find the new profile > Install Available Apps" and toggle on this game.
          4. Go to the new profile once again, log into Play Store and see if you can update it on the secondary profile. Do make sure that Play Store has the OBB toggle enabled, of course.
