Whatsapp notifications only appear after unlocking the Phone

i installed GOS around a month ago and whatsapp via the APK provided on their site.
at first i would hear a notification when receiving a WA message,but now i need to unlock the phone in order to see on the app icon, the number of missed messages.
sometimes i also need to open the app in order to receive those messages.

my OS is mostly stock,just Firefox and Whatsapp, both downloaded from their respective site.

I think you need 'unrestricted battery' for whatsapp if you don't use Playservices.

Do you have any dns or vpn enabled if so try truning them off and test it.

i recall reading something of the sorts while looking for a solution
do you know how can i have Whatsapp in unrestricted battery mode?
in the settings i saw a list of apps that have this privilege but no option to add another one.

Open the Settings app > Apps > All apps > WhatsApp > App battery usage > Unrestricted.

With all that enabled it also skips notifications sometimes. Viber also. Google services are needed so the notifications work properly
