Crash during install of google play service from App Store (not Aurora or other)

Hello forum users,

I'm currently experiencing issues with the Google Play Store and Google Play Services on my Google Pixel 7a.
The device is running the latest stable firmware as of May 2025.

When installing from the App Store, both Google Play Store and Google Play Services are installed simultaneously. However, during the installation process, the device crashes and restarts. After the restart, only the Play Store appears as installed in the App Store, while Play Services does not.

When I attempt to reinstall Play Services, the installation seems incomplete. It appears as not installed in App Store but in the device’s settings under "All apps" Play Services is installed with around 500 MB of storage, whereas it typically uses around 1 GB. If I reinstall it again, the device crashes once more. After this crash, Play Services shows as using 1 GB, but it still does not appear as installed in the App Store.

Additionally, the Play Store is not usable. On the first screen, I see a green login button, but tapping it has no effect.

I have already disabled VPNs and custom DNS settings. I also use Shelter with two profiles, and in both profiles Play Store and Play Services are uninstalled.

My questions are:

1) How can I successfully install Google Play Services without the device crashing, and ensure that it appears as properly installed in the App Store?

2) How can I make the login button in the Play Store functional so I can log in?

ry_za I just tried installing Google Play + Google Play Services on a factory reset device twice using both the stable and the alpha channel. Everything installed fine both times.

Where did you get this log? It doesn't appear to be a normal crash log, but rather a kernel log which may not be related.

All others apps are working without a problem and I can install apps from F-Droid or Aurora.

ry_za I can see that you are altering system settings using adb. If you are not doing development work, then I advise against using it. adb is a development and debugging tool, and not generally a tool for troubleshooting software issues on production systems. It's likely that your adb usage at some point broke something which resulted in the crashes you experience.

Also note that adb usage comes with some security risks.

I recommend backing up all of your data, and then performing a 'factory' reset. To 'factory' reset the device, remember to back up your data, then go to Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset)

Advise against sharing these system logs publicly, as they can contain sensitive data which you might not want published.

I think the problem started on the working profile of Shelter with the new stable update at start of this month.

When comparing the App Stores between both profiles of Shelter. The App Store on the working profile is even missing some apps like:

Vanadium, Markup, Messaging.
Last month both App store were identical.

Using adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 app.grapheneos.apps, I was able to remove the App Store from the default profile.

With "adb shell pm list users" I can see both profiles

and delete the App Store with "adb shell pm uninstall --user 10 app.grapheneos.apps".
