A Macbook Air running MacOS with all Apple's domains and ASN (All IPs) blocked at router level. there are no "leaks" or telementry. No Apple ID and that crap, you dont need it on a Mac. Apple doesnt really hide its telemetry like Microsoft. Best eco-system. Just dont forget spctl off.
Was a Gentoo user, Arch user. Since using Debian on servers. Desktop? My sweet Apple with all Tim Cook's books off.

Blocking domains from an OS vendor to achieve privacy from them is badness enumeration. You’d still have to connect to Apple’s servers to get updates, for example

23Sha-ger but this is again security compromise. You can run mac without apple id, but you cannot install apps from the appstore which has best sandbox. You can install apps from web or homebrew but this has less security.
To have max security on Mac = apps only from app store.

If u jump in too much at the deepend like arch etc, u will likely be discouraged

Once ur good with mint or ubuntu, help ur friends / family move from windows, that's rewarding

Or not ... Hard to have them make the switch. Even when they have tried Linux and admit that the difference is quite thin as a user. Always that fear of doing things differently!

Considering windows has a MUCH larger userbase, the incentive for finding vulnerabilities in windows is MUCH larger.

Linux is more secure, its more privacy oriented, less invasive, and FREE.

Sigismund You just parrot whatever found on the internet because XYZ said so.

PrivSec is run by people who have made significant and noticeable contributions to security, for example @akc3n who does stuff at GrapheneOS. The Linux OS secureblue has made notable contributions as well, and they don’t deny that Flatpak has its issues. They are credible sources. Likewise, if you could show or prove any contributions to security that you’ve made, I’d be more inclined to believe your points.

I wonder if Android will ever be usable on the desktop. At the moment, it is completely unusable as a desktop OS. But I am also excited to see progress.

This could lead to GrapheneOS being a much more useable option for desktop usage, including potentially being available for specific laptops. This would undoubtedly be the most secure and private option for desktop use, compared to the status quo where there are pros and cons for many options and all are less secure and private than mobile.

To answer thread title -

iPad + keyboard, with as much hardening as is possible.
Airplane mode most the time, minimal install and no iCloud signed in.
Further restrict app permissions disallowing mobile network, background refresh off.

Any heavy lifting required I just remote into a windows machine at home which is assumed exposed and just has games /vms on it.

Tentatively awaiting desktop mode to mature on graphene so I can think about moving to a one device set up, monitor and lap dock.

Yes, there is the potential to run traditional desktop Linux apps and even maybe Windows apps in virtual machines.

Android laptops are expected to come out in 2026, with a Qualcomm chip. That seems short given the current state of Android Desktop. And some Qualcomm chips are apparently not compatible with the Linux terminal on Android.

Yes, but if Google (and other partners) officially release an Android laptop, it means they consider desktop mode to be almost ready for production. And that seems unrealistic to me today...
I have time too, but a failed first release could have negative consequences for the future.

An extremely debloated windows with simplewall firewall, BitDefender, and a good VPN. It's really only for gaming, I would never trust any version of windows for anything sensitive, that's what GrapheneOS is for in my use case.

Byteang3l Be aware that Steam has developed components that permit playing on Linux for the majority of the games. That's what I do.

Eirikr70 yeah, I gave them a try and I was really only able to get BeamNG Drive and indie games working. Anything AAA with a launcher got stuck on the launching executable stage, although since it's Linux I'm willing to accept I didn't configure something right, but I spend most of my day dealing with tedium at work and when I get home I just want things to be easy and enjoyable. And to be honest, debloated windows with a deny by default firewall was a self compromise between my privacy ideals and just wanting things to work lol.
