Molly-FOSS: Automatic App-updates in-app function doesn't work

Hello Molly-users!

I always use the latest version of Molly-FOSS, but the advertised in-app update function has never worked for me.
I don't mean the update function of an app store (Google, F-Droid, Obtainium), but the one within the app!

After all, there is a menu for this in the GitHub version of Molly(-FOSS)!
I normally avoid F-Droid, but I did try installing the .apk file from F-Droid once (I installed F-Droid for this as an exception).
-But that didn't help either. There is neither a notification for a new version nor is there an automatic update.

My request:
If this auto-update function has ever worked for anyone, I would be very happy to hear how you managed it!

Just today there is a new Molly release v7.39.5-2, so good opportunity to test it again!
I still have v7.39.5-1 installed on a Pixel and as soon as I get a tip from someone here about what I need to set so that the Molly app notifies me about the new update v7.39.5-2, I'll be happy to test it.

Eagle_Owl Although, not directly what you're asking, but you can install Accrescend app store from GrapheneOS "App Store" app and then install Molly FOSS from there. It has ver. 7.39.5-2-FOSS in it right now. Never tried it, but the updates should work via Accrescend then.
Using Accrescend app store is recommended by GrapheneOS devs.

Eagle_Owl I have version v7.39.5-1 installed. This version was installed after I got a notice to update from Molly. However I have not received a notice to update to v7.39.5-2, even if I select check now for updates within the app, there is no update offered. My original Molly Foss version came from GitHub.

Thank you, but that's not what I am asking for.

I am not searching for any way to update (automatically).
I use Obtainium for all apps that don't have their own update function.
I start it once a day and let it check for updates.
This saves energy (better than scanning every x hours) and is completely sufficient.

But:
I am wondering why this feature of Molly “auto-update function in-app” doesn't work for me.
Because in another discussion in this forum, several participants claimed that it works!

I know that it supposedly also depends on…
– the app having been installed from the external repository for F-Droid
– and that WLAN must be switched on.
Nevertheless, I have not been able to get this feature to work with any variant.

I think such an in-app solution is simply much better and because the developers offer it, it should work.
Since several GOS forum participants have claimed that it works, I am looking for the error on my side and help from other GOS participants so that I can find my error...

Eagle_Owl Weird. I installed it from Accrescent as well via Obtainium, and the update function works. Maybe try installing it via Accrescent again?

No, not weird, when installing from Accrescent.
Accrescent's regulations prohibit developers from offering their apps with their own update function.
This is why the Molly-FOSS version offered via Accrescent does not have an active in-app update function!
This is only available in the version that we can download from GitHub or from the external repostory from F-Droid (is identical, has the same fingerprint hash!).

This (!) is weird, because according to the developers, the app's internal update function only works if you have installed from the external F-Droid repository (I found this in the issues on GitHub).
But maybe the developers have tried something in this version and programmed it differently than before?

Eagle_Owl I see. My mistake then. Now that I think about it, I guess I am using the non-FOSS version at the moment. Which updates itself without problem.

Then you are getting update info from Obtainium, not from Molly-FOSS itself, right?
