Performance issues since QPR2? (Scrolling lag, low fps)

Hi!

I've been experiencing performance issues on my Pixel 8 for a short while now, I think since the first QPR2 release.

Its manifesting as intermittent laggy/low fps scrolling and animations (like when smooth display is off). Seemingly happening mostly when screen brightness is up high, and perhaps when the device wakes up from sleep. But it's quite hard to reliably reproduce. The phone doesn't feel hot when it happens, so I assume it's not due to throttling.

The slowness lasts for 1-2 secs each time before the phone returns to being silky smooth.

I've tried various graphics related options in developer settings to no avail. Forcing peak display refresh rate didn't help, and fps overlay shows 120hz throughout the lag episodes.

I've tried to live with it but it's very jarring tbh, and happens often enough to be disruptive of my daily phone experience.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas?

I have Pixel 8 too and can confirm I'm seeing these stutters since around the time of release of QPR2 or the past week or so.

I can't confirm this, I haven't noticed any tendency to occur with this although I haven't really tested it heavily.

I haven't touched developer options at all so I can't confirm this.

I'll add that it happened to me once when I opened a folder in the home screen. This made the folder open in a slowed animation that takes up to 0.5 seconds or so from my memory, instead of the usual animation speed that opens folders much quicker than that.

Developer options should not be used and should always be kept off. They are very dangerous and not intended for production usage.

upstage4186 Turn off developer options as a starting point. Try with and without smooth display enabled in the display settings too.

I've noticed the same what appears to be slow refresh rate on my P8 recently as well 🤔

GrapheneOS I keep developer options off by default. I only enabled them to see if I could flip something to help with the stuttering.

Issue remains with dev options on or off, unfortunately.

The periods of lag are like having smooth display turned off, but all of the time, so I'm not really sure how to see if the issue remains or not?

I've never enabled developer options and can confirm this issue happens to me intermittently.

Bump. Any more ideas @GrapheneOS?

There are some times when this happens super often, e.g. now, when the phone slows down and stutters every 30-60 secs or so.

I know it's not exactly a show stopper problem but it's completely destroying the experience of using the phone, almost a usability issue if I can't even scroll without problems.

I'm actually thinking of switching phones if I can't fix it, and I assume all Pixel /GrapheneOS phones will be at risk of this problem. It's a shame because before QPR2, everything was perfect. 😭

Do you guys use an alternative launcher?

I only have a real long lag or pause after existing the settings and only in combination with Nova launcher.

Turning animations on or off in developer mode did nothing in this regard.

Likewise, I've only ever used the stock launcher.
